This film that can be called an auditory variation on Alchemy, in which the volume of microphone feedback increases and decreases according to the distance from the subject. “This is a work of minimal cinema that continuously zooms out on a flower blooming in the darkness, as a paradoxical approach to the act of seeing.” (Tsuneo Nakai)

LAST OF THE PERSIMMONS opens with a black-and-white image of a main inflating helium balloons in the shape of rabbits. Onto this image Mr. O'Neill places two mirror images an old Fleischer-style cartoon elephant comically licking its mouth as if in anticipation of yet another layered image, that of a ripe persimmon. —Manohla Dargis, "In the Studio's Shadow, An Avant-Garde Eye," The New York Times, 11/8/2004

“Using exciting juxtapositions of shade and movement, this silent and surreally poetic film examines subtle changes of light and landscape in New York. NEW YORK NEAR SLEEP exploits the basic potential of film for capturing light refractions. Hutton imposes on this film the aesthetics of still photography and uses as a structural device the duration of perception of the subtle reflection of movements and illuminations.” – Bill Moritz, Theatre Vanguard

Experimental short contrasting the grey interior of a house with the vibrant colour of its garden. Sunlight shines through leafy trees. The camera zooms in until the image is out of focus. When it zooms out again, it reveals sunlight through leaves reflected in the window of a house. From inside the house, we see a woman, in colour and fully dressed, walk by a window. Outside, the camera and photographer are seen in a mirror. The woman, in black & white now and inside the house nude, walks around a large room, trapped. Further images of the naked woman are interspersed with colour images of the garden outside: pond, lilies, etc. Eventually, the image of the cameraman and his mirror returns and the reflection in the window and the sunshine through trees are repeated.

I did the sound score. The original tape was done on 2" high-band color videotape, two computers, a Paik-Abe video-synthesizer, with studio chroma-keying and multi-generation video editing." Between is a highly-wrought piece of structuralism which makes no concessions to its audience…it implicates viewers in what is happening on the ‘other side’ of the screen… and one is fully conscious of the role of the photographer. The camera is made to approach a lit screen in a viewing theatre before turning full circle to approach the projector… the trip was made only once, but the sequence is repeated by an intricate process using successive generations of prints – a print from a print etc… Here there is a progressive deterioration of ‘quality’ and the image breaks up into signs and symbols and finally into abstract fragments. What we have then is a clear case of art as truth through fabrication, with the imperative that the fabrication, the contrivance, must be revealed…
