Filmed at the time Hockney was painting Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, Portrait of David Hockney is made up of a limited number of shots, observing the periphery details of his flat and studio. Each view is held so as to focus on its particular qualities and composition and, with the accompanying soundtrack of off-screen phone calls, conversations and musings, builds up a picture of Hockney’s daily life.

The work explores the essential need to regain awareness of the body as a primary means of expression, communication, and experimentation. Agnès Contat, a psychomotor therapist by profession, brings to the film a critical reflection on social systems that exert continuous pressure and repression on the body, locking it into unnatural frameworks. Through this lens, the film challenges therapies that merely attempt to "fix errors" within a flawed social system and asks how to prevent the "death of the body" caused by the intellectual and abstract over-privileging of discourse — often found in psychological and psychoanalytical fields — at the expense of physical reality.

Made in collaboration with the California Locksmiths Association and the Los Angeles, Burbank, and Glendale Police Departments, the film features interviews with police as well as a burglar himself.

But in 1971, the Hoxha regime was honored to welcome the ethnic Albanian actor Bekim Fehmiu (1936-2010), at the time an international star in Yugoslav theater and film. Before his trip to Albania, Fehmiu had appeared in the popular Italian television smash The Odyssey (1968) and the Cannes-winning I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967). Dokufest will also feature a photo exhibit of recently-discovered still images taken during Bekim Fehmiu’s Albanian visit.
