Mr. Sloane is a murderer. But, as both his middle-aged landlady and her homosexual brother quickly notice, he's very handsome.

On the cusp of adulthood and in search of work qualifications and a better life, Franciszek Wróbel - a baker from a small village on the Czech border of south-western Poland - emigrates to industrial Silesia to join the Voluntary Labour Corps. There he is chosen from all of the applicants to write a diary of his experiences and daily life. Between his vocational courses and training, he struggles to make friends, pass his exams, and maintain relationships with girls.

Anika, the daughter of the Greek partisan refugee and the Hungarian medical student, Zoltán fall in passionate love. But Anika's mother wants her to marry a Greek, for she is very homesick and wants to go home. The under-age girl cannot protest.

After looking at a photograph from the end of World War II of two young boys holding guns, celebrating the liberation of Warsaw, a documentarian for Polish television tries to find the boys and discover how their lives have went.

The same day of their marriage, Jean's wife dies of a strange ailment in the middle of surgery. Afflicted by the loss, the young man abandons his medical studies and takes refuge in the memories of his time of courtship. At the same time that this happens, a wave of murders shakes the city with the same pattern of behavior: the victims are surgery students whose bodies have had both hands amputated.

The film deals with three different episodes. The first one deals with a story of an artist and a daughter of a noble scholar; the second about the life of a talented flutist and his love; the third about the story of love between a ceramicist who was commissioned to make a ceramic for the royal family and his wife.

The parents of a two boys remarried after divorce. The older one stayed with his father and his attractive young wife, while the younger one stayed with the mother and her new husband. On Sundays, the two boys visit the other family alternately, and the younger Djuro will soon realize that they have much more in common.

Wilhelmine Lührs hesitates, but ham, sausage and money finally persuade her to change her mind. She lays out the cards for Mrs. Henck just as her husband had wished. But the fraud is discovered and Mrs. Lührs has to appear before the public prosecutor. But even in court, the ludicrous Wilhelmine manages to use her wisdom to cleverly get out of the affair.

A newly hired engineer is also an amateur boxing star. He also dreams of becoming an actor. He is pushed in different directions, he also wants to get married.

The writer Bektas-agha, arriving in his native village, remembers his childhood: his mother died early, his careless father, who married the beautiful Kulimbala, the teacher Sagatbai. It was a time of collectivization. Bai and his henchmen, playing on the feelings of people expecting hunger, persuaded the collective farmers to barytma — stealing the herd from the neighbors. The members of the cell offered to punish all the perpetrators, but they made up the majority of the residents of the village. After completing his college, dark-skinned Adivasi Shekhar returns home and finds that his mother, Savli, has passed away. Distraught, he is consoled by Father Abraham, who also tells him that his mother had an affair with wealthy Ramgarh-based Thakur Pratap Singh, who refused to marry her even after she became pregnant. Shekhar decides to avenge his humiliation and sets forth to expose Pratap. Upon arrival in Ramgarh, he finds that he has a fair-skinned look-alike half-brother, Dilip, as well as a sister, Neelu. Dilip meets him, hires him as a office staff person, and asks him to impersonate him in order to meet Deepa, the only daughter of wealthy Vinodbabu, and Shekhar agrees to do so. Shekhar meets Deepa and both are attracted to each other. Shekhar decides to tell her the truth about himself, and returns to Ramgarh. Once there, he finds history repeating itself as Dilip is in love with an Adivasi belle, Jhumki, but is refusing to marry her.

The movie is about five American commandos who must trek across the North African desert, then blow up a German underground facility where a special kind of explosive is under development.

The film has no clear plot. It deals with the reactions of an older man and a young woman to the news stories that occur in 1968: the May student protests, Vietnam, Biafra. It is scattered, apparently disconnected. The characters find themselves in illogical situations: in a train cemetery, in a ruined house where some young people edit a journal. There is no sound of steps, and doors, when opened or closed, make no sound.
