In 1929 Berlin, the progressive editor-in-chief Bornstein is on trial for libel. An article in his magazine attempted to uncover the role that Reichsanwalt Jörns had played ten years earlier in the "clarification" of the murders of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. The article explained that the then court martial judge knowingly covered up for the murderers and delayed the trial. At the trial, the testimony of witnesses succeeded in proving the truth of the publication and exposing those behind the murders as those who were preparing fascism.

Filmmaker-griot coming from the theater, it was with a camera, while the war in Vietnam occupied everyone's minds, that Sarah Maldoror gave visibility to the African wars of decolonization: Angola, Guinea Bissau, French Guinea, Cape Verde... Her short film Monangambée addresses the torture by the Portuguese army of a sympathizer of the Angolan resistance. At the end of editing, Sarah Maldoror approached the members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago during a Parisian concert and offered to add sound to her film. The next day they watched the film, were convinced and recorded their first soundtrack for free as evidence of African-American solidarity. Shot in Algiers, Monangambée is a film about torture and, more broadly, about the incomprehension between the colonized and the colonizers. It is based on a novel by the Angolan writer Luandino Vieira, then imprisoned by the Portuguese colonial power.

A 1968 British musical short film (30 mins) starring Judy Huxtable and Anthony May. It was directed by Douglas Hickox. It tells the story of a young man (May) cycling around the Hampstead (NW3) area of London on a Raleigh RSW16. After crashing into a billboard he falls in love with a fashion model (Huxtable) depicted on it. Despite the title, the Belsize Park area does not actually feature. There is almost no spoken dialogue, and the soundtrack to the film is musical virtually throughout. The title song of the film has been a hit for Mireille Mathieu and Engelbert Humperdinck (a top ten hit in the UK and a top 40 hit in the USA) amongst others. The title is derivative of the French film, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg; apart from a musical theme there is no other obvious link.

As a student with negligible funds, and as a flaneur in love with the 'merveilleux quotidien' of pre-revalissage Paris, I used my little cine-camera to record stuff that caught my eye. To keep within my means, most of the shots were ony a second or two long. In retrospect, a still camera would have been more sensible. But I was in love also with film and with the possibilities of fast cutting. So what you get here is a stream of images from my walks: torn posters, shop signs, cinema hoardings, window displays, flea market merchandise. I appreciated the torn posters more in the spirit of Léo Malet's 'décollages' than Rotella's contemporary nouveau réalisme. Some years later, the Events of May 1968 broke out, covering the walls of the Left Bank with posters of protest. Recording them seemed a good way to end my film - just as they announced the beginning of a new cultural epoch.

A jobless Geordie shipyard worker escapes from his bleak existence into an imaginary life with the girl of his dreams, a salesgirl at a futuristic Pink Lane cigarette kiosk. This is a funny, bitter-sweet silent comedy, an odyssey through a Newcastle cityscape in transition from an industrial Tyneside to T Dan Smiths modernist vision of the city as a Brasilia of the North. Directed by Robert Tyrell, it is also a brilliant social document of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the 1960s.
