Through a rapid and rhythmic montage of materials shot by the author and archive footage, this film made in the winter of 1967-68 is an ideological judgment on the violence of power and consumerism. Images of the powerful of the time involved in the genocide in Vietnam alternate with others of rituals of mass society, traffic and shopping. For those unwilling to be imprisoned and indoctrinated, the escape route is the one indicated in the final sequence, shot with the actors of Gilberto Giuntini and Mario Pachi’s Teatro Prova, in which the performers find a means of resistance in rebellion and in a series of liberating actions.

The documentary analyzes the role of “leader” in different social contexts—in politics, industry, and organized crime—and seeks to answer questions about the characteristics of a leader. In particular, it focuses on the new figure of leader that characterizes the era of technocracy: the corporate executive, the manager.

Both a “short story”—a film about a girl who rejects “reality” to live in her own private world—and a film about progressive states of mind. Joan goes to a two-room apartment, removes wigs, false eyelashes, makeup; depressed at her own appearance, she lies on the bed and over-eats. The soundtrack (“It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to…”) adds irony to her “orgy.” But it is her isolation from human contact, and her entrance into a self-indulgent fantasy world that are central “themes” of the film.

Filmed in Mississippi through the winter and spring of 1966. Six tractor drivers and their families were thrown off the plantation on which they had been working for $6 a day, because they were striking for higher wages. The film follows the families, who lived in tents through the winter, as they began to build their own homes. They were urging people in the surrounding Delta area to go to Washington to demand housing for the many, many others who needed decent and affordable housing. They put up tents across from the White House, hoping to bring the plight of the people of Mississippi before the nation and the world. Made with support from the Delta Ministry, the National Council of Churches, and Neighborhood Developers.

Mouris’s “first attempt at ‘capturing’ Coney Island in home-made images” illustrates the sights of Coney Island with animated paper cutouts. “A classmate, Peter Schlaifer, who had split the day of filming with me on that first experience at the Chemistry department, joined me in doing a silent animated film rather than doing yet another two-dimensional poster for a graphic design class assignment. Thus was born CONEY ISLAND EATS.” (Yale Film Archive)
