Cinematic Era: 1962 Vintage

In creating the film, Evald Schorm and Jan Špáta took full advantage of the possibilities offered by the Cinemascope format and created a visual poem about the beauty and fate of trees and the simple life of people in the mountains. Dynamically slow, artistic shots of majestic nature alternate with civil documentary, yet lyrical details of human work. The film emphasizes the work and social changes in the lives of lumberjacks, but on a broader scale, it also reflects on the passage of time, the eternal values of nature and man, and his relationship to work and the collective. All this in a seemingly simple, very restrained in commentary, but all the more effective documentary story. This poeticized image of human labor was created as a commissioned film for the Ministry of Economy.

According to Brazilian journalist and biographer Ruy Castro, Vinicius de Moraes directed a short film in the second half of 1962 titled Azul e Branco ("Blue and White"), about Portinari’s tile work at the Ministry of Education in Rio de Janeiro—an endeavor that rekindled his longtime passion for cinema.

The film portrays the events surrounding the wedding of a young man in a popular alley in the Adhamiya neighborhood, and the ironic, laugh-out-loud comedic situations he encounters, as he is surprised by a series of incidents that grow more frequent and intense on the wedding day itself.

This long-suppressed and controversial documentary was produced in 1961 for network television but never broadcast. Co-mingling cinema verité and narrative techniques, the film offers a sensitive but critical look at the slum called Cortile Cascino in the center of Palermo, Sicily where poverty and early death are constants and where the church and the Mafia compete for the inhabitants' fealty. The established church, largely ignoring the plight of its parishioners, nonetheless voices its outrage when a faith healer draws large crowds. The Mafia runs an illegal slaughterhouse and controls the concession to funerals but also distributes free food to the district's hungry residents. In the face of relentless adversity, the women provide the only stabilizing force. The neighborhood's despair is tragically foregrounded in a sequence depicting the burial of baby who died of malnutrition. The soundtrack is composed of comments by the people, recorded and translated by the filmmakers.

This is about a man in prison. This man remembers his past, unless he invents it. The roughness of the cell wall is his reality, which his imagination breaks up. A broken life, described using materials broken into a thousand crumbs.

Youth criminals Fredriksson and Bergström are taken to the police station on suspicion of robbery and manslaughter. Fredriksson breaks down immediately and he acknowledges his guilt for what he has done. But the police also would like him to admit to something he did not do. Bergström is not possible to crack. He succeeds without difficulty to manipulate his environment and his psychopathic traits becomes even clearer as the hearing progress.

The film was produced by the United States Information Agency (USIA) for audiences outside of the United States.
