Hired gunman tries and fails to kill The Sheriff. Then the gunman's kid brother coms to town, thinking The Sheriff is to blame for the gunman's death.

Pietro is a thirteen-year-old shepherd boy who lives in the sixties in Cappadocia, an isolated village in the mountains of Abruzzo where life has kept the same rhythms as always. His uncle emigrated to Venezuela and has promised him that he will send him the necessary documents so that he too can emigrate. Meanwhile Pietro wants to learn English and his grandfather, who wants to help him realize his dream, discovers in the newspaper how Pietro can study a foreign language even without a teacher. But not all the inhabitants of the country are so open to the future...

Three soccer fans are determined to do literally anything to get to the soccer match between Czechoslovakia and the famous representation team of Brazil. Reaching their goal to see the dream match live cannot he precluded neither by a sudden work task nor family obligations. However, there is one more obstacle in their way: for some time, their enthusiastic behavior during soccer matches has been monitored by the police. This time, it will not be easy for them to get to the stadium.

In September, 1959, six Europeans leave Cook's Bay on the southern coast of Dutch New Guinea, now West Papua or Irian Jaya, to trek north to the far side of the island. The journey (450 miles, as a crow flies) across unmapped territory took seven months; three Muyu porters died. Near both coasts, the expedition met villagers who invited them to observe rituals and live with them. In the interior, all villagers kept them at bay, and they depended on air lifts from Hollandia for food and supplies. They climbed above 10,000 feet, built 14 bridges, and fought leeches and malaria. The narrator focuses on describing Stone Age savages, headhunters, and cannibals.

Nine volunteers begin digging a tunnel through rugged mountain terrain. The group includes three miners. The others have come from different parts of the country for different reasons. When winter comes, a blizzard makes the road impassable and the truck with supplies cannot reach them in time. With only a hundred metres to dig, the tunnel collapsed. Everybody leaves the construction site, except the communist Damjan. In town they check in at the mine and are due to start work in two days. During these two days, one by one, they are overwhelmed with shame for leaving the tunnel, and finally return to Damjan to finish their work despite all the difficulties.
