The film was remade in Malayalam in 1965 as Kavyamela and the producer of Kantheredu Nodu, Velan, subsequently remade it in Tamil in 1968 as Devi, starring R. Muthuraman and Devika.

She loves Nemat, the wealthy young man Hassan (Hassan Youssef), but his family rejects their marriage. Nemat is ashamed of her mother's work and runs away from home. Nemat works in several jobs but is subjected to many harassment, and at the same time she continues her relationship with Hassan despite all the pressures around her.

A traveling troupe arrives in a lively southern port town during the Tanabata festival, led by the mysterious swordsman Daigorō, whose incredible skill quickly makes him a local sensation. Beneath his fierce persona, however, he hides a tragic past: he is actually Hikōichi, a fisherman who lost his beloved Oyū to a cruel feudal lord years earlier.
