Cinematic Era: 1955 Vintage

Each portrayed painter produced an experimental animated short film to be featured in this film. A short film by Herbert Seggelke.

The same year Shaw’s Malay Film Productions released P. Ramlee’s Penarek Becha, they also produced this melodrama centred around another humble trishaw driver. Like Ramlee’s film it was co-written by young literary upstart Jamil Sulong (who later became a director). Similar issues around class, wealth and modernity are explored through the tale of a kindly older trishaw driver (Omar Rojik) who adopts Jamilah, an orphan and marries her guardian, offering her a simple but better life (including a very, very long visit the circus). As the years pass Jamilah pulls away from her impoverished kampong life towards a world of motor cars and monied families, while kind Omar’s health is failing. A classic slice of social-realist melodrama.

The parallel visit of the GDR pioneers gives them exciting and unforgettable experiences on a cable car ride to the peaks of the High Tatras, where they learn a lot about the flora and fauna and recognize the overwhelming beauty of the mountain world with a good view.

Short film about the experience of taking psychoactive drugs. ‘I wanted to make a short documentary-style film about marijuana and hashish, psychoactive drugs that in 1955 were still relatively unknown to the general public. They were mainly used by a small group of artists, jazz musicians, intellectuals, and North Africans. I wanted to visualize the ritual of rolling and lighting up a joint, and then put a series of seemingly unrelated images next to each other to represent the feeling of being high. When the movie was finished, we took it to the festival for 16mm films at Cannes, and won the Golden Lion for ‘Best Use of Film Language’. (Shinkichi Tajiri, Tajiri, 1993)

South African Movie

In this final entry in the Pete Smith Specialty series, Smith pays tribute to actor and stuntman Dave O'Brien, who took many falls and spills (and upon whom objects fell) when he played hapless characters throughout the series. Under the pseudonym "David Barclay", O'Brien also directed many of the Specialties. Clips from previous films highlight O'Brien's work.

The film revolves around a lawyer who inherits a huge fortune and falls in love with his neighbor, but her family refuses to complete this marriage and marries her to another man, which prompts him to move to the countryside due to the shock. There, he meets a visual artist and a friendship develops between them that develops into love. The artist supports him amid his financial crisis, which caused him to lose everything he owns.

In the Suez desert, a playful widow who owns a café falls in love with the driver (Ragab), who in turn loves her younger sister (Nemat). She tries to kill her, but she runs away to hide with a petroleum engineer, who hides her and decides that she should live with him in the desert, where His work and decides to marry her, but his younger brother, Hossam, arrives and falls in love with her, but he withdraws after learning of his older brother's love for her. Rajab learns of the matter, so he and his sister decide to kill the engineer, hide his body, and portray the incident as fate and destiny, and they succeed in doing so. Hossam tries to uncover the mystery of his brother's death.

The financial pressure on him and his family is getting on his nerves.

So Mahender decides to leave Tomato in the park near Kamal Roy, and instructs Tomato to call Kamal his dad. Tomato does so, and this results in utter chaos in the life of Kamal. He is unable to convince his lady love Usha Sen that the child is not his; and additionally Kamal is under pressure from his dad and mom to get married. Kamal begs Tomato to leave him, but Tomato refuses to do so. How will this impact on Kamal's life and relationships?
