In this short film, a curious high school civics class has a lot of questions about Canadian history. Suddenly, while the class is visiting Robert Harris’ famous painting The Fathers of Confederation, John A. MacDonald comes to life from the painting and speaks to the students, explaining the Canadian Constitution and the reasons for it. This lively animated meditation on history and art is an engaging portal to the lessons of the past.

Through the pattern of this film a ‘Test’ at Lord’s runs like a thread and a broadcast commentary on the match is imposed on the background of cricket as a game, a craft, an interest of a people, a piece of history. The craftsmen are shown who make the ball and the bat–that ‘fourth straight stick’ with which the batsmen defend ‘the other three’. The craftsmen are shown who play the game, from W. G. Grace in the ‘nets’ to D. G. Bradman and Denis Compton in the thread of the ‘Test’. The history of the game is epitomized in the Long Room shots at Lord’s and from there the camera moves to the village green; to the London side- street where the urchins play on a ‘bumping pitch’; to South Africa, and India, where in the ‘blinding light’ there is often ‘an hour to play and the last man in.

Narada, sensing Rambha’s attempt to disrupt a rishi’s penance, provokes her vanity and orchestrates events that humiliate her on Krishna’s birthday by honoring Kalavathi and Vidyadhara as a dance pair. Though bound by rivalry and jealousy, Vidyadhara and Kalavathi fall in love and meet secretly. Nalacoobra, driven by desire, spies on them, deceives both through disguises, and causes Vidyadhara to believe Kalavathi is unfaithful. Heartbroken, Vidyadhara leaves Dwaraka, and Kalavathi sets out alone to find him. Nalacoobra repeatedly pursues and tries to violate her, while Rambha, cursed by Indra and blinded by jealousy, plots Kalavathi’s death. Kalavathi endures storms, deception, and exile, yet remains devoted. Ultimately, Rambha manipulates Kalpalika, a fanatic devotee, into preparing Kalavathi’s sacrifice at the Bhubaneshwar temple in pursuit of divine power.
