Cinematic Era: 1934 Vintage

In this short film from Educational Pictures, Ernest Truex stars as a man who doesn't like kids and prefers dogs. This gets him in good with the boss, as several other potential candidates for a transfer to South America were ineligible since they had families and didn't want to leave the country. But since Ernest doesn't want kids, he manages the promotion. Of course, there's FAR more to this story...especially when he comes home and finds a baby!

The daughter of a poor farmer leaves the village for the city. One day, her older brother, who previously wandered, comes to her. Disillusioned with city life, the brother and sister return to their native village.

Eman Vovísek drinks away his unrequited love for Liduška, who married his cousin, the factory owner Danek. Because Eman is aggressive when drunk, he is taken to a mental health facility, where he meets his uncle Hanibal. Hanibal has a breakdown after his wife Matylda broke up with him. Matylda wanted to be free so she could marry her first love, Uncle Jonathan, who is due to arrive from America. Jonathan sends a telegram saying he will stay in Paris. Such a situation does not suit Danek. He assumed that Liduška would be visiting from America and that he himself would go to his mistress in the meantime. He therefore visits Vovísek and persuades him to play the role of Jonathan.

Two young men who try to steal the body of a rich man, who has no respect for others, with the intention of flogging the corpse for public consumption. Later, they realize that the coffin contains a large amount of treasure and decide to distribute it to the poor.

Jacqueline took one of her friends to a place where tourists, informants, girls, pimps and Apaches rub shoulders. Her husband, who watches over her, after having corrected Julot and Frize, is considered an ace at the Bal des Terreurs. He thus finds the love of his wife.

After his business partner Otto vanishes with the company’s funds, Roman Tarski tells his wife Stefie he must work secretly by night as a waiter at the club “Alhambra.” Stefie grows suspicious of his exhaustion and odd behavior, and when she finds him drunk with the maid Kazia and her fiancé Walery, she enlists Baron Carolescu’s help to expose Roman’s deception and uncover the truth about the missing money.

A very nice young man, Sylvain Renaud is "surrounded" by two bad guys who want to drag him into some very dirty business.

Willie Whooper, doused in reducing creme, shrinks to the size of a mouse and is chased by a cat throughout a house. Finally Willie returns to normal size and angrily covers the cat in reducing creme. The cat now shrinks to mouse size, and gets a black eye from the mouse he habitually torments.

And while the story of the Gingerbread Boy as shown in this short takes up six minutes -- a short, if standard length for a cartoon -- here we have about half of its length used in an introductory bit as Oswald's attempt to listen to the story of the radio is interrupted by the human toddler he is minding.

Unbeknownst to them, they are followed by an attractive journalist with a camera, after which they both fall in love with him, and they compete with each other for him.

Gunsundari, the dutiful wife, acts as savior for her troubled joint family. Her father-in-law Shyamaldas battles alcoholism and accusations, while her husband Chandrakant falls prey to villains and a prostitute, losing his property. Gunsundari also aids her sister-in-law Sushila through marital woes, facing personal trouble due to a secret. Destitute, she eventually reunites with a similarly down-on-his-luck Chandrakant on the streets. A coincidence ultimately reveals Shyamaldas left his property to his estranged son, leading to a happy ending.

The first movie version, from the age of black & white, of Flemish (heimat-)author Ernest Claes' classical novel, titled after the nickname (Dutch 'the White', referring to a blond male) of the main character: a smart but naughty farmhand's son whose eternal mischief, pranks and disobedience drive his elders (especially teachers, family and father's grumpy employer, a rich farmer) and classmates to despair in a time when a boy's punishment was still inevitable, swift and often severe.
