Cinematic Era: 1919 Vintage

Clarita, a young girl, finds a poor hungry man, who gives him some coins and comforts him with affectionate words. The scene takes place on a walk and when the little girl runs back to her house, she loses the embroidered handkerchief with her name, collected and stored with love for the unhappy beggar. The plot is complicated in episodes linked to play chance.

Betty Standish, a small town girl who inherits a fortune, fulfills her ambition of living in the big city when she rents the bachelor apartment of the vacationing Jerome Kent from his valet Greggs, who poses as Jerome. When Jerome returns unexpectedly, Betty, thinking that he is a burglar, holds him off with a revolver. Attracted to Jerome, Betty offers him a job as her chauffeur to reform him, which Jerome, who is attracted to Betty, accepts.

This cheerful mix of wartime spy drama and comedy sees the returning heroes of a small English village recount their exploits in the war in Mesopotamia. German spies have been using a Peace Society as a front for their nefarious activities (the rotters!), but our stout lads are on to them. They finally rout the blackguards while on active service in the Middle East - or at least the English field that stands in for it! The eponymous lads actually include a lass, who joins up as a nurse.

While no content description of the film could be found, it is clear the plot of Der Fürst der Diebe und seine Liebe/The King of Thieves and His Love (Viggo Larsen, 1919) deals with a gentleman criminal, played by Larsen himself. In 1920, critic Friedrich Sieburg wrote about a terrifying experience he had when viewing this very film when suddenly the musicians stopped playing while the film went on. "In act 3, as Der Fürst der Diebe was roaring along in his car (his shawl fluttering like a flag, wind blowing briskly through the high grass of the passing landscape), the musicians in the small orchestra - violin and piano for lively scenes, organ for deathly scenes - suddenly decided to break for dinner. The music stopped. Silence. The reels whirred. The light hissed. The action sped ahead. I tell you, it was frightening. I felt as if I was six feet under."

Joe and Monty, two ex-porters, importing artists' models, find it somewhat difficult to fill a regular customer's order, when they receive a letter from Brushsky offering a large reward for the return of his model, who he describes as having a birth-mark on her left shoulder.

We also see the steam tram from Batavia to Meester Cornelis.

The Wild Woman is a silent comedy

After sneaking into the circus, Charley is chased by an irate guard, turning big top acts topsy-turvy.

Vendebout (a play on “vent debout,” or headwind) and his friend Courandair (“courant d’air,” or draft) invent a flying house that transports them to a desert in less time than it would take to read about it in a book of travels.

After "Quiet" Carter, who remains a bachelor, rescues her from Eddy's attack, she learns the attacker's identity and insists on finding him. Lost in a storm, she arrives exhausted at a Mexican dancer's cabin.

On a secluded island south of the equator, Dolores Winthrop lives with her guardian, Blanca De Castro, a mysterious woman who refuses to reveal Dolores' parentage or explain the young woman's presence on the island. Occasionally the two women are visited by a man identified by the villagers as "the mad American." On the mainland, the grasping Don Pedro learns that the American has located a diamond mine, and in an effort to discover its whereabouts, the villain sails to the little island.

The remains of a propaganda film against anti-Semitism. DIE GEKREUZIGT WERDEN (The Forsaken Jew) was presumed lost for a long time. The present fragment is based on a screening copy that was in a serious state of decomposition. It was discovered by Filmarchiv Austria and extensively restored. The film tells the story of a tormented man, exposed to ridicule and racism. As a child, Ariel becomes estranged from his deeply religious family because of his lack of interest in the Talmud. Despite his later professional success and his social commitment to factory workers, this rupture casts dark shadows over his journey through life.
