They have been married a year and one night the hubby had to stay at the office. On the way home he reads an article in the paper that tells of the evils of the modem wife, and the wife at home reads of the evils of the modern husband. Each dreams of what the other is doing in the time that the one is supposed to be at the office and the other is supposed to be at home. The dreams are so terrible that when the two of them awake they make resolutions to trust each other and a second honeymoon begins.

The adventurer, perceiving his deadly peril, employs Jack Burton, an impoverished young Englishman, to act as his double. The girl shoots at the double, and other fiendish plots are carried out to kill him. Burton frustrates them all.

Billy Warren, timekeeper on the construction job, arouses the enmity of Brent and Easton when he resents their bullying of the other men. Pay day finds the men celebrating in riotous fashion, and Brent in a crazed moment breaks into the station and attacks Helen. Her cries bring Warren, who trounces the bully.

Billy, while wearily trudging along the road, sees the San Diego Fair in the near distance. Believing that he might make some money if he could get inside, he steals in under a visitor's coat tails and after wandering through the interesting streets he sits down on a bench to rest. An old rounder sees Peggy and follows her as she runs from him to the store of her friend, an excitable Italian, who pursues her annoyer and punishes him. Billy and the old rounder meet. They are old friends and the rounder laughs when he sees Billy meet two girls and invite them to dinner, for he suspects that bill has no money. Bill, of course, has none, and when the proprietress demands her pay he suggests to the girls that they should pitch dice to see who shall settle.

Steve Nelson, a clever crook, arrives at the little station where Helen is operator. He lives quietly at the village's little boarding house preparing for a coup when Helen receives instructions that lead her to suspect Steve.

Cora Madison, the town flirt, delights in making men love her and then dropping them, so when newcomer Valentine Corliss arrives, she views him as just another potential victim. Rather than falling for her charms, however, Valentine persuades Cora to use them in getting her past suitors to invest money in one of his phony business deals. Cora soon falls in love with Valentine but also discovers, along with the other townspeople, that he has been swindling almost everyone and that he courted Cora simply to be able to use her well-respected father's name in connection with his business scam.

The stepson of a landed family wishes to go off to university.

Erma Desmond leaves her uncle and aunt to visit a friend, Phyllis, in the city. There, she finds work as the companion to the highly temperamental Mrs. Stanley. Mrs. Stanley has terrorized her husband to such an extent that he has gone away for a few months, purportedly to take their daughter to school, but mainly to get some peace. The servants, however, are still victims of her terrible fits until the day she decides to head for Reno to get a divorce.

FRAGMENT | Petersen has forgotten his gentlemen’s club-appointment and has to employ every trick to escape from home unseen. Mrs. Petersen watches over him like a hawk, and he only gets respite as he starts faking a toothache. Coincidentally, the shoemaker drops by and agrees to take Petersen’s place discreetly so that the appointment can be kept.
