Cinematic Era: 1912 Vintage

Short western, in which a hotheaded prospector argues with his wife about her housekeeping skills. She decides to leave him, and travels with a passing prospector who offers to accompany her through the mountains. However, when they are attacked by Indians, they are rescued by her husband. Eventualy the husband is killed in a second attack.

He had no thought, but to work and save money. His poor wife did nothing but drudge, with no return other than an existence. One day, a young man stops at the farmhouse to get a drink of water. He imagines from her sad face that all is not as it should be, and tells her that her eyes are too beautiful for tears and her hands too delicate to carry the burdens set for her. The husband sees and hears and is at last made to realize that her life, without the sunshine of love, is but a little better than death, and so he makes a change for the better.

In 1913 early French film pioneer Victorin-Hippolyte Jasset died abruptly at the age of 51. His filmography of about 60 titles includes all film genres but is today mostly lost. He was particularly interested in detective or crime genres and with series like Nick Carter and Zigomar he is considered as one of the creators of the serial. The spectacular siege of Jules Bonnot's Gang at Choisy-le-Roi near Paris on April 28th 1912 inspired Jasset to make this 'Bandits en automobile'. French audiences recognized immediately the resemblances with the actual Bonnot Gang, a reason for which the film was prohibited in many cities.

Among the green hills and running brooks, we follow the country boy and girl, who are happy in the contentment of their hearts and a ripening love for each other. In contrast we see another picture of a city boy and girl with entirely different surroundings, at odds with each other and the boy disturbed by the coquettishness and indifference of the girl.

SILAS WILSON realizes that his business is being run to the ground, and that he cannot longer compete with the newer foundries unless he makes radical changes in his methods and employees. His workmen have grown old and antiquated in his employ. Through the influence of his daughter, the general managership is passed over to her fiance,—one Jack Berry —a young man, well trained in the school of modern methods.

When Indians attack a white settlement, a brave kidnaps a white baby to give to his wife as a replacement for their dead baby. The white mother goes to the Indian camp to look for her child and is captured by the Indians who plan to torture her. The settlers attack the Indian camp, destroying it completely and killing the braves, while the Indian wife returns the baby to the white woman and allows her to escape. The Indian wife mourns her baby at its grave, unaware of the destruction of the Indian camp.

Old Silas Jordan, a settler, finds that his horse is not able to pull the heavy load demanded, and discovers the well-fed broncho of Jim Davis, a ranchman, staked out near the trail. Jordan deliberately takes the broncho, hitches it to his wagon and drives on.

Marion Leonard is the teacher of a group of children of the tenements. She loved them, loved them with a mother-love and a sister-love, and the warm love of suffering humankind.

This hilarious scene recounts the misadventures of our friend Rigadin, who, due to fortuitous circumstances, has replaced his fiancée, Héloïse Roulan, in her role as rose-dresser. Unfortunately, at the moment of the coronation, the Mayor wants to kiss the lucky lady who must lift her veil and the whole village recognizes Rigadin. Shame and confusion for our unfortunate friend who escapes his critical situation by fleeing. Fortunately, the young fiancée has managed to escape from the prison where she had been locked up by suitors ousted at the price of virtue; she arrives in time to collect the bonus and the laurels and rehabilitate Rigadin.

Master detective, Lambert Chase, unravels a case of poisoning

A patriotic film tinged with humor and sentimentalism. Stock footage (the crowded town, the departure of warships) and reconstructed war scenes in the desert are part of the second half about the war in Libya. The soldier Bidoni (P. Cuticca) is a mess-maker but has a great affection for Claretta (M. Tucci), the young daughter of the colonel, which she returns.

Based on the dutch paintings of lacemakers of the same time - the film depicts a poor woman's strive for money to be able to marry her beloved; doing so by entering a local lacing competition.

A recent immigrant learns several hard lessons about how husbands in America are expected to behave.

Oniatare, a young brave of the tribe of the Hurons, and Kowa, a chief of the Mohicans, are in love with Ethona, or "The River Flower," an Indian Princess. The Hurons and the Mohicans are sworn enemies. The young brave and "The River Flower" meet from time to time. Kowa notices this and in plaintive song would lure the fair Ethona to him. But it is of no avail.

Stumbling into the squalor of her miserable tenement room the woman, a wretched victim of drink and dissipation, sinks down at the table and lights the half-burned candle.

She was the princess, and a human girl. Sincere, simple, with an earnest love for all things everywhere, she hated royal pomp with a hatred that was passion. In her light, bright eyes was the uncopyrighted story of human struggle, of contending human emotions. This, then, was the girl to be sacrificed for a political alliance. The prince selected was a jellyfish personage with enough blue blood to give a girl with as much red blood as the princess the blues.

A mine owner discovers a vein of gold but unfortunately dies. His wife doesn't want to sell the mine and so the forman decides to lock her up in a cottage with a dangerous and hungry leopard.

Jimmy Rudge, chief of the infamous Gang "Jacks of Spades", kidnaps the Marquis d'Harcier and passes himself off as him. The impostor held large parties at his castle, in order to rob the invited guests. Charley Colms, a quirky private detective, gets hired to unmask the Marquis as a fake.

Short comedy about Polyte, who has to bring a note to a general. As means of transport he uses a horse, a kind of dog cart and a pig. On the way he wreaks havoc so he is put in the cachot, where he comforts himself with his pig.

In 1912 Jasset turned from fantasy and spectacle to realism in making the first of two Zola adaptations, as part of Éclair's new series of social dramas. For Au pays des ténèbres, based on Germinal, he took his crew to Charleroi in Belgium to film in authentic locations, and although he updated the story to the present, he went to great lengths to recreate in the studio the detail of the actual mining galleries, exploiting the ability of film to be a recorder of contemporary reality.

A woman and a mistress fight.

The popular artist Frank Harvey has been offered a job in America. On the voyage across the Atlantic, Harvey catches sight of the captain’s beautiful daughter, and the two quickly become good friends. However, a fire breaks out in the ship’s hold, and while the crew struggles to put out the flames, Harvey has to keep the passengers calm with his very best performances, and pray for his and the lives of others. Max, awakening on his wedding morning, discovers that it is close on the hour when he should be at the church. He dresses hastily, and in struggling with a refractory collar, allows his boots to be burnt by the fire. There is no time to change them, and he hastens off to the bride's house. On the way his soles part company with their uppers, and poor Max enters into negotiations with a passing labourer for the purchase of his footgear.

Cobbler’s daughter May has beautiful, long blond hair. Her fiancée Billy, her father's youthful apprentice, loves both May and her hair. But Billy has a weakness for long hair and is ensnared by Madge, who wears an elaborate wig. Billy wants May to fix her hair as prettily as Madge does, but when Madge’s hairdresser demands payment for the wigs she refuses because the hairdresser has turned her hair green. The case lands in court with Billy summoned to serve on the jury. When Madge pulls off her wig Billy runs back to May ready and willing to eat his humble pie.
