Rastus is an odd jobs man, that is he does odd jobs when he has to, but when there are a few small coins in his pocket he prefers to sleep. He is looking for a soft spot when the scene opens and the picturesque banks of a small stream attract his fancy. It is in the open sunlight, but a darkey likes warmth and he composes himself to take a nap. In his dreams he rises and makes his way down to the water from where there are always to be found cotton bales that make the finest sort of couches. But on his way along he passes a sailors' boarding house where men are being shipped for a long voyage. The trim sailor suits and the promise of good pay attract Rastus and almost before he knows it he has shipped for the cruise. He is outfitted at a slop shop, but already he is losing his nerve and he has to be driven on board by his captain. The ship is wrecked on the African east coast and Rastus is the sole survivor.

We see views of olive trees, women in the village, a street scene, a mosque, and the central marketplace with many passersby. Chikli's camera captures the narrow streets and whitewashed houses. We move to the olive grove, where children in the trees shake the branches and pick the olives. A boy smiles mischievously at the moving camera but we also feel the difficulty and intense repetition of his labor. A donkey carries baskets of olives. Men stand in line on a dirt road to receive their payment.

Women’s weepies were a nickelodeon staple in the early years of movies. In these one-reel dramas, women trapped in no-win situations confronted heart-wrenching decisions: Should a young woman wed her penniless sweetheart or accept a rich but loveless match? Should a mother give up her infant so that the child can eat? Should a loose woman risk a glimpse at her son who has been raised by others and is unaware of his birth mother’s shameful past?

This travelogue was made by the French company Pathé Frères. An article in The Dominion newspaper in February 1910 reported that “through the medium of the kinematograph the public now know many people, cities, and scenic spots ‘by sight’ that they would not otherwise have known”.” Across the Mountain Passes of New Zealand was coloured using Pathécolor – the best of early colour processes. The process utilised a multitude of female colourists, who cut stencils for each colour in each frame of film and then laboriously hand-coloured each frame.
