Journeys in Japan S01 E19 Nara, Nara: Nara Heijokyo, Celebrating 1300 Years of Culture

Nara was established as the capital more than 1000 years ago. It was the country's first major administrative center and was called Heijo-kyo. This year marks the 1300th anniversary of Heijo-kyo and the city is hosting many commemorative events, including the unveiling of re-created palace buildings.
