Beijing impresses people with its great richness of historical culture and the flourishing growth of its modern economy. But isn't this in itself a beautiful fantasy that hides the reality of Beijing life? A pervasive flood of images and forms have become a substitute for something else, and they completely fill our world. A tide of media images pour in on us from every direction, overfilling our eyes and ears, rendering our real senses insensate, allowing no line of sight to the reality of life, leaving us powerless. Middle-aged widow Beatrice Hunsdorfer and her daughters Ruth and Matilda are struggling to survive in a society they barely understand.
