The Abysses of Life was the only film produced by Peru Film Company, a company run by the Polish Stefanía Socha. Three years after arriving in Peru, she decided to undertake the production of a feature film, for which she enlisted the collaboration of journalist and writer of costumbrista works and zarzuelas, Julio Alfonso Hernández, who wrote the screenplay. Students from the acting school she ran played the central roles in the film.

Unfortunately, the Censorship Board has tragically misunderstood its function. Its selection process should prioritize, above all, the expected artistic merit and intellectual capacity of its members. The board uses three main weapons with inexplicable cruelty: prohibition—a certain film must not be shown for three or four reasons utterly lacking in reasonable grounds, as in the case of Heroic Pages; the scissors, with which they cut scenes; and the classification system, the criteria for which are unknown. The results are as follows: 90% for men only; 8% for adults and young ladies; and 2% for children.

Second attempt at producing a regularly appearing newsreel. The previous attempt was the so-called Cinema Theater Magazine, later called National Magazine, which appeared in 1910. It contains: a scavenger hunt at the Barranco baths; a reception hosted by Mr. Manuel Quimper's political friends at the Zoological Park restaurant; a workers' demonstration in honor of their candidate, Mr. Espinoza, for the congressional seat; luncheon at the Grand Hotel; an agricultural festival at the Chacra Cerro estate; details of the recent political elections; and the funeral of the commander of the Roma Fire Brigade.

This cameraman films again the places in Barranco that were the subject of a 1911 visit and, as then, shows “the baths and the influx of bathers during peak season.”

Tomorrow, a film premieres at this theater, the result of the audacity of the cameraman from the Olimpo, who was stationed in Piura after the attack on Catacaos by the revolutionaries led by Mr. Orestes Ferro. The film includes the departure of troops to Piura, the battle, the capture of ten revolutionaries, the return of the kidnapped merchants, Messrs. Mendoza and Calle, their reception in Piura after their rescue, and the guerrillas Messrs. Plata, Castillo, and another. Mr. Castillo is shown with a bullet through his chest and back, a wound he received in the battle of Poechos. The film is over 350 meters long and, as you can see, it is very interesting, being one of the few and only ones in Peru that has been taken in such circumstances.

It contains images of the city of Lima and the town of Vitarte during the work stoppage of April 10, 1911. It was the first time that the working class adopted the measure of a general strike in solidarity with the workers of the Vitarte textile factory, who were demanding a reduction in the working day and an increase in wages.

It is a film of a journey on the Central Railway from Callao to the regions of Chanchamayo, Huancayo, Perené, and Mantaro. It is shown in five parts, with a total length of 3,000 feet. It is reported that the film, with a total duration of two hours, “will be sent to England as an illustrative report for our country.”

Of all the films shot in Lima, this one surpasses them all in sharpness and clarity, leaving nothing to be desired from the footage taken in Europe. Our entire social and elegant world appears in this film.

Such was the turnout that the company found it necessary to close the doors to avoid further crowding. The film [...] was very well received, rivaling in clarity and sharpness those we receive from Europe, especially in the part depicting the departure of the cruiser Bolognesi and the Iquitos, which, passing perfectly clear before the audience, elicited enthusiastic applause. The part showing the battle stations also has very interesting details, allowing one to admire the magnificent heavy-caliber cannons with which our cruisers are equipped.

It is presented perfectly clearly, showing even the smallest details, the different movements performed by the correctional school, as well as the tasks of the bullfighters.
