A woman arrives for a piano lesson to find her teacher playing a piece that has no name and no ending; she discovers that it is about a former lover whose memory still haunts the younger woman. When it is the older woman’s turn to play, she, too, cannot finish the piece she is playing, which was written by her daughter in the months prior to her death. As both women struggle to articulate their feelings of loss and grief, they realise that the music gives them a means of holding on to, and living with, their pasts. 'Resonance' is a film about memory and emotion - and about the power of music to articulate and give life to the human spirit.

The sound of the streets of Teheran is transformed into forbidden beats, people sing and young women and men rhyme their inner feelings. They tell us about a society that rejects them, streets belonging to the government and a vision of a utopia within creativity. Street salesmen and pedestrians form an imaginary choir of the streets, backing up the youth, suggesting the public space should belong to the public. The narrative is captured in a circular chronology in a single day, from dawn to dawn.

Colonel Robert Lundy has become infamous as the archetypal traitor who betrayed the cause of the besieged Protestants in the walled city of Derry in 1688/89. Each December his effigy is ritually burned in memory of the victorious outcome of the battle between Protestant King William and Catholic King James II. It is also as a warning to all potential traitors. Ian Paisley, leader of the DUP, was especially vocal in popularising the term Lundy to defame all those who were deemed guilty of ‘selling out’ in the push for peace after decades of conflict in Northern Ireland. Gregory Campbell, DUP, sums up the depth of feeling when he says: “There is, within the Protestant psyche, deep contempt for people who betray their principles.” But who was the real Lundy and does his name carry the same potency today when compromise is a key component of the new political discourse? Unionist Roy Garland embarks on a personal journey to discover the reality behind the myth.

Listen to the Land Speak sees Manchán Magan – one of our most acclaimed writers on landscapes and language – reveal the profound knowledge and wisdom contained in our landscape and myths. Filmed over four seasons, the film unfolds from Winter Solstice to Bealtaine through Reek Sunday to Samhain, exploring how the stories and myths associated with the rivers, mountains, and lands around us are crucial to unlocking aspects of how we need to rebuild our relationship with nature today. It also becomes an unexpectedly personal story – as he seeks to help heal society's relationship with nature. Manchán also realises that there is a serious illness within himself that makes him see these ancient sites and beliefs in a whole new light.

Surreal and mysterious, in equal parts absurd and intense, Mutual Admiration Society is part of the noted multi-film collaboration between actor James Devereaux and experimental filmmaker Rouzbeh Rashidi. Based entirely around a silent, tour-de-force one-man performance by Devereaux as a man who appears to be haunting and threatening himself, Mutual Admiration Society uses startling visual techniques and editing rhythms to create a claustrophobic hall of mirrors with Devereaux’s tormented protagonist at its centre.

Reminiscent of the ‘trance films’ of Maya Deren or Kenneth Anger, The Magic Circle unfolds in a timeless dusk where an archetypal sorceress ritualistically navigates magical circles. A double figure executing doubled gestures, the circles she engages with are also double: the protective circle of sand or fire surrounding the enchantress and the circle of the self-reflected through circular mirrors. Within the Magic Circle is the self, a place of fragile refuge that is also a nightfall where she constantly encounters and passes through herself. This unsettling and melancholy meditation is at once ornate and minimal, displaying Pour Hosseini’s mastery of light and composition to haunting effect.
