A documentary about Tapio Rautavaara, a traveler and artist. "The purpose of the film Tapsa was to reflect Rautavaara as a person. He himself gave the keys to it as a character. It is tinted accordingly. Any kind of film could have been made from the material. It could have been made on a completely grave scale or just full of jokes. But it is probably faithful to Rautavaara as it is."

People on Sunday is filmed with a hand-cranked camera familiar from silent films and the early films of the Lumière brothers. The flickering images and shimmering light produced by this old technology also characterize Viita's film. People on Sunday refers in its title to the German classic Menchen am Sonntag (1930), which is a well-known example of the impact of historical events on the later interpretation of a film. The inexorable passage of time and the beautiful fragility of life are central themes in both films.

A crazy found-footage collage composed of monotonous, advertising, and playful shots is overlaid with hand-painted illustrations directly on the film emulsion. The outlines of objects peel away from their photographic record and jump into another film. The open refrigerator door spews out its contents until there is a syncopated pause, during which the calf of a leg trembles under the sensual vibration of the word FOOD. “Our food is radioactive. The fallout descends upon our cities and ourselves. It penetrates everywhere. The world takes on new colours, values are upset, and existence involves risk. Only dreams and expectations remain.” — Eino Ruutsalo

The film criticises selective breeding and explores the history of oppression based on racial categorisation in both the human and dog world. The film’s audiovisual argumentation is constructed effectively through split-screen cinematography and voiceover narration.

Itä-Pasila, the rough-around-the-edges neighbourhood filled with concrete building blocks, office buildings and diverse inhabitants, is at the centre of Anu Pennanen’s experimental film that mixes documentary with fictional sequences. This mostly dialogue-free film, scored by Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1, explores the eastern side of the Helsinki borough divided in two by train tracks. As inhabitants of Itä-Pasila reminisce about everyday life in their beloved part of town, their thoughts are conveyed to the viewer through text on the screen. To some, Itä-Pasila is reminiscent of grey and depressing barracks, but to others the area is a cherished home filled with good memories.
