Even though Istedgade has changed a lot over the past few years, there are still traces from the times when the notorious street in Vesterbro was Copenhagen's own red light district. For the three people we meet here, the street is also their second home. 48-year-old Mette, 34-year-old Wesley and 26-year-old Danny share a drug addiction and a harsh upbringing in common. But they are also human beings with a story to tell, and in 'Gaden' we are for once told the stories from them directly, and over the course of two years. Their escape, the drugs and their unconventional community – with Istedgade as the rough background which ties their (life) stories together.

Jacob Taarnhøj is a true verbal acrobat, and his unique storytelling style makes him a real treat to watch on stage. The story of the confused doorman at Fiskeby Badehotel and his unusual experiences with beautiful girls and crazy guests is one of the funniest things ever seen in Danish cinema.

Boarding school friends Edith and Yvonne's intimate friendship is put to the test by fate in this tragic love triangle. Their paths diverge when Edith's father dies and she has to move back home to her mother. Years pass, Edith marries a handsome officer, while Yvonne pursues an artistic career. Time and again she declines Edith's invitations to come and live with her and her officer, Kai Hornung. A woman with octopus characteristics visits a plastic surgeon with an urgent need to fit into society. A Nordic surreal portrayal about the strangeness of social pressures and wanting desperately to belong.

Helena seeks out her long lost friend Charlotte, who has just buried her father. Helena’s flashbacks take us 35 years back in time to Helena’s and Charlotte’s childhood. The girls are close but have a complex and tense relationship. She recalls the crucial incident that ended their friendship.

The film is incomplete and there are no preserved programmes which explain the story. The fragment consists of the following scenes: Scene 1: An older and a younger man are talking in a living room. Scene 2: The young man is courting a woman and is rejected on account of another suitor. Scene 3: The older man receives a telegram about a shipwreck. The news almost drives him to take his own life. Scene 4: The two men are now standing outside a shop and seem happy again. A woman is sitting with a child on her lap, perhaps belonging to the young man and the woman he previously pursued. The film was directed by Viggo Larsen, who, as far as we know, directed all films for Denmark’s first film company, Nordisk Films Kompagni, in the period between 1906 and 1909. An infamous criminal couple, nicknamed ‘The Hotel Rats’, have long haunted the hotels of the city. As yet, no one has been able to best the cunning nocturnal thieves. One day, the proprietor of a hotel recently visited by these unwelcome guests turns to Sherlock Holmes for help. But the ‘hotel rats’ are not easily captured, and Sherlock Holmes must use all his cunning, putting his life at stake to lure the criminals out into deep waters. (stumfilm.dk)
