Ben Hart, a youthful mining expert, arrives in the mining town and promptly seeks out Mabel Whitaker and her mother, who have a map purporting to lead to a gold deposit. They determine to look at the deposit, but are warned by Jim Halliday, a bad man. That night Mabel sees a hand steal through the window and grasp for the map. She plunges a knife through the arm, and it is hastily withdrawn. The next day Ben sees Jim Halliday near the gold mine and sees that he is nursing a wounded arm. Ben overcomes the bandit and has him jailed.

One, The Dutchman, is out to get both gold and revenge from certain people in a small mining town who had him imprisoned unjustly. The other, McBain, is just trying to go straight, but that is easier said than done once The Dutchman involves him in his gold theft scheme. Based on the 1949 novel The Asphalt Jungle by W. R. Burnett, the story is given an 1898 setting. It is the second film adaptation of the novel following 1950's noir classic The Asphalt Jungle.

Treasure Island

Young Jim Hawkins, while running the Benbow Inn with his mother, meets Captain Billy Bones, who dies at the inn while it is beseiged by buccaneers led by Blind Pew. Jim and his mother fight off the attackers and discover Billy Bones' treasure map for which the buccaneers had come. Jim agrees to sail on the S.S. Espaniola with Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey to find the treasure on a mysterious isiand. Upon arriving at the island, ship's cook and scaliwag Long John Silver leads a mutiny of crew members who want the treasure for themselves. Jim helps the Squire and Espaniola officers to survive the mutiny and fight back against Silver's men, who have taken over the Espaniola.
