The Scorpions were a Serbian paramilitary unit that gained notoriety for their involvement in war crimes during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. By using the statements of former members of the Scorpions unit, and the materials recorded by the unit itself in the course of its campaignes, this film demonstrates the functioning of a typical combat unit organized by the security service to do dirty jobs in the Balkan wars. Including their treatment of Bosnian Serbs; from refusing them water to the stomach-wrenching murders of six Bosnian Muslim men, some of whom were minors, in Srebrenica in July 1995. Archival footage used in this film includes materials of Humanitarian Law Center, International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia.

This film explores multinational shoe company Bata’s impact on individual lives and their surroundings. The film’s aesthetic, shifting from site to site and shot to shot, offers pockets as a visual version of the bubble that was the Bata colony itself. The characters are all connected to that past. They guide the viewers through the merging of past and present in memory. The film’s colouration also evokes this mixture.

Jethro Tull is one of the most successful British acts of all time with a career reaching from the late sixties to the present day. In 2003 they made their first (and so far only) visit to the Montreux Festival. As ever Ian Anderson leads from the front with his instantly recognizable voice and inimitable style of one-legged flute playing. Split into a semi-acoustic first half and a full on electric second half, the concert was a triumph combining newer songs such as “Dot Com”, “Pavane” and “Budapest” with classic favorites.

In this coming-of-age tale, adolescent Miles narrates his memories of his single mother, Wanda, an eye patch–wearing, former sex worker. Both mother and child are a nomadic unit, regularly relocating their home base with stuffed suitcases in hand. Paired with the invisible handiwork of stop-motion animation, Chan visually choreographs her characters in artful tableaux, intimating both depth and distance in Miles’ filial bond with Wanda. Marrying an endearing voiceover with elegantly lit and intricately stylized visual compositions, Chan’s tender, parental ode employs hand-constructed dollhouses and hand gestures to illustrate the migratory tethers of memory and family.

Alain Kan is a legendary figure in French rock—and in rock music in general. His mysterious disappearance one day in April 1990 in Paris, at the age of 45, left a lasting impression. Alain Kan’s story is that of a little boy who wanted to become a star. To live in the spotlight. From his first single in 1963, at the age of 19, to his last album in the mid-1980s, his artistic journey led him through every kind of creation, every excess, every passion, and every twist of fate. He was, in turn, a heartthrob for teenage girls, then a David Bowie lookalike, and finally France’s first punk.

After all the anticipation, the results are in, and in many ways, the fight lived up to the hype. Last night, fight fans were able to see a rare moment in sports when a sudden 'star' rises from what is categorically termed as goodness, to the cusp of greatness. It was quite a moment in time for avid fight fans and the tense aura in the Madison Square Garden was so thick moments before the fight that you could slice it with a knife. When referee Benjy Estevez Jr. finally dropped his arms as they were parallel to the deck - signaling the start of the fight - it was both the initiation, and culmination of one man's hell of a journey. From the opening bell there were signs that most who predicted a Mosley victory - (myself included) - would be in for quite a surprise.

Making mention of the Epistles to the Corinthians, the title of this film refers to the mirror, which according to Saint Paul is the metaphor for our present condition: distorted, adrift, incomplete, “shaken by an enigma”. Adrian Paci, however, a magnificent and internationally recognised Romanian artist, highly passioned about the work of Pasolini, cites this Platonic sentence to better play with it. For it is children, as joyous and lively as a flock of birds, he entrusts with these fragments of thoughts. Even coming to admire them, in short, as they populate the branches of the tree of knowledge, dazzling with their bright splendour.

Ashkenazim—Jews of European origin—are Israel’s “white folks.” And like most white folks in a multicultural society, they see themselves as the social norm and don’t think of themselves in racial or ethnic terms because by now, “aren’t we all Israeli?” Yiddish has been replaced with Hebrew, exile with occupation, the shtetl with the kibbutz and old-fashioned irony with post-modern cynicism. But the paradox of whiteness in Israel is that Ashkenazim aren’t exactly “white folks” historically... A story that begins in the Rhineland and ends in the holy land (or is it the other way around?), ASHKENAZ looks at whiteness in Israel and wonders: How did the “others” of Europe become the “Europe” of the others?

The film documents the late 19th-century birth of Zionism and its repercussions for Palestinians. Brings together rarely-seen footage of Palestine before 1948 juxtaposed with original source documents, eyewitness accounts, stunning choreography, moving testimonials, and interviews with historians. This award-winning film shows that the expulsion of the indigenous Arab population from Palestine was far from an accidental result of the 1948 war, shining a spotlight on the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by the Zionist movement.

After reviewing the images obtained, the footage was censored in many countries, ending up in oblivion, lost in a warehouse in Central America. The Journey And The Labyrinth: The Music Of John Dowland, directed and produced by the Emmy-award winning team, Jim Gable and Ann Kim of Graying & Balding, Inc., delves deeper into Sting's relationship with the sixteenth century figure, who has captivated generations with his songs composed primarily for lute, which Sting tackles along with esteemed lutenist Edin Karamazov. Filmed appropriately at Lake House, Sting's 16-century manor house in Wiltshire, and in the ancient gardens of Il Palagio, his home in Italy, the DVD also features the performers before a live audience at St. Luke's Church in London. Interspersed between performances of such timeless Dowland songs such as "Can She Excuse My Wrongs," "Come Again," and "Flow My Tears," are discussions with musicologists David Pinto and Anthony Rooley of the composer's place in music history and his relevance today, plus recitations by Sting from Dowland's personal correspondence.

Common sense says you can't make a living in America playing avant-garde improvisational jazz. But Ken Vandermark does it anyway. Among musicians, Vandermark's work ethic is almost mythic. The Chicago reed player has released over 100 albums with nearly 40 ensembles, spends over eight months per year on the road, and lives every other waking moment composing, arranging, performing—and trying to discipline his two hyperactive canines. Though Vandermark was the recipient of a 1999 MacArthur genius grant, he still spends most of his life in smoky clubs and low-budget recording studios, hoping people will plunk down hard-earned cash to hear his wholly non-commercial music. Following the artful cinéma vérité style of the internationally acclaimed Sheriff (Work Series #1), Musician (Work Series #2) forgoes all interviews and voice-overs. It is a fly-on-the-wall time capsule that expertly captures every subtle sound and texture of this most American of art forms.
