Young Sonu volunteers to lead the camels out to graze when his father becomes ill. While taking a lunch break, the camels wander off across the arid terrain. As Sonu pursues them, he unwittingly crosses over the border into Pakistan. A Pakistani herdsman graciously leads him back to the other side and promises to deliver the camels to a border checkpoint the following day. With a photojournalist's eye, director Craig Chivers focuses his lens on the day-to-day struggles encountered by Kay Rice, her partner Karl and six children, whose goal is to break the generational cycle of poverty. Shot in an intimate, cinéma vérité style, No Place Called Home follows the family as they move from town to town in search of affordable housing. "I know we're poor, but it's what we are, not who we are," says Kay, as she tries to make a fresh start by fixing up a rundown rental home. Unable to find steady work, the Rices rely on food banks and help from a local charity to make ends meet. When things turn sour with the landlord, Kay fears his veiled threats may mean losing her children and decides to take him to court. In capturing the stark realism of a life with few options, No Place Called Home puts a modern face on what it means to be poor in Canada.

Two youths bicker their way up the East Coast and through a discomforting and poignant transition into adulthood. Using still images, animation, Super-8 and an experimental score composed and performed by the filmmaker, The Drive North subverts the typical coming-of-age tale with social commentary, humor and an understated identity-politics slant. ws.3 is a minimalist investigation of the texture of landscape. A windy, abstract soundtrack accompanies close-ups of a lunar-like, brilliant blue and white terrain. As the camera arcs rapidly and images move in and out of focus, sky and desert seem to merge. Cho erodes distinctions between documentary and abstract representation, producing a complex experience of place.

Episodic in nature, Curious About Existence reacts ultimately against an uninspired but prevailing acceptance of moral terms. It begins with a song of worship, an ode to the looming nastiness of our organic existence. A celebration of disorder and entropy, the opening song seems borne of a curiosity about the possibilities of joy and freedom. In a more lighthearted segment, a squirrel and beaver converse about how everybody feels bad a lot of the time, which is compounded by the stupid things they do as a result. By enjoying the spectacle of the river creatures’ conversation, we are guided through another chapter of anxiety about shame with the opportunity for impunity.

Unity in Diversity is based on the allegorical painting Galaxy of Musicians by the late 19th century Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma. It shows eleven musicians, all women dressed in the different costumes of India signifying unity in diversity. This painting was shown at the World Congress of Religions in Chicago, in 1893, where the philosopher Swami Vivekananda addressed the danger of orthodoxy in religion. A nascent concept of nationalism was emerging at this time with strong reformist movements. The video contrasts this with later histories of the rise of fascism in India and the genocide in Gujarat in 2002 that shook the roots of this democratic country leaving mayhem and despair in its wake. What starts off as a visual fairy tale, where all parts of the nation play in harmony together, ends in a bloodbath.

In ‘Love’, the subtleties of first desires to climactic scenes of impassioned dialogue and action, to betrayal, disgust and violence that have played out over the history of film are ripped from original contexts and edited into a repetitive staccato rush, regurgitating, for our entertainment, horror and critique, the stereotypical, hyperbolic trajectory of (heterosexual) love. Through this process Moffatt unites the graphic punch and suggestiveness of the still image with the satisfaction of a complete movie narrative. In the end, its only a movie. ‘Love’ embodies Moffatt’s desire to create work that has an ‘international look’ and deal with ‘universal predicaments’. 'Love' is both parody and pastiche, critical comment, and wryly humorous.

This video documents one of RSG's self-playing video game consoles, hacked to exploit existing bugs and glitches in the code. In this case, a commercial skateboarding game provides the source. As hard rock, punk, and rap play in the background, the skater protagonist twitches and flails, attempting to navigate the quirky architectures RSG has "prepared." Alex Galloway writes, "I wanted to do something in the same spirit as when Nam June Paik put the magnet on top of the TV."

Based on the real-life death of Mike Brant, who reluctantly became a foreign singing sensation during the 1960s and '70s. Born in a displaced person's camp in Cyprus, the then-named Moshe Brand grew up in a working-class environment, occasionally making time to entertain at weddings, bar mitzvahs, and, eventually, nightclubs both at home and abroad. When Sylvie and Carlos Varton saw one of his performances, they whisked him off to Paris and saw to it that his career took off. Though he was an almost instant success, he is believed to have committed suicide at the age of 28. This film features rare interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, as well as footage from home movies, television appearances, and radio recordings.

Ballet master Pierre Lacotte brings the long-dormant "Paquita" back to life at the Paris Opera (where it debuted in 1846) in this fanciful tale about a noble child kidnapped and raised by gypsies, never suspecting she's of royal blood. The ballet retains much of its original character, thanks in part to Lacotte's faithful choreography and Luisa Spinatelli's authentic sets and costumes, which were modeled after the originals.
