Derived from found super-8 footage of night-time cityscapes shot in London and Berlin in the early 1970s, this once-silent amateur film of lights and neon signs has been reorganized through editing, superimposition and colour inversion, with Helliwell's soundtrack combining electronics, computer sounds and short wave radio signals.

“FIGURES IN THE LANDSCAPE…refers to older media, in that it was shot with a pinhole camera, a form of camera obscura. The images show a sprawling Chicago suburb, while texts refer to earlier inhabitants – the Indians. The tentative, not completely sharp pinhole image combines with text to suggest that the landscapes shown, like all the landscapes we create, are themselves impermanent.” – Fred Camper

The director tells the story of Boris Grebenshchikov through the image of Leo Tolstoy. According to Viktor Tikhomirov, both heroes are similar "in their delusions and achievements". The film has a lot of chronicles and, of course, Grebenshchikov's songs sound, and George Gunitsky described the tape after its premiere at Pushkinskaya 10: "A completely untethered and insanely surreal film in a good way. And it is gratifying that all this postmodern film improvisation is involved on a cool aquarium basis. We need to look at the picture again once or twice, get a better understanding of it. And savor it. A very worthy work."

The sublime, seductive landscape in Algonquin Park, Early March 2002 takes shape through a slow zooming out of the camera, starting with a monochromatic white screen (in fact a pure projection of light) and only revealing the full picture at the end. Location, subject, and especially the viewer’s position (a cliff high above a lake), evoke the effects of C. D. Friedrich’s Romantic painting Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, 1818. The sequence of revelations moves from the pure abstraction of the film’s beginning to the actual scenery and culminates in the final scene of a group of skaters on a small, distant oblong of ice. Even as the movement of the skaters disrupts the contemplation of the motionless landscape, their position off-center reminds us of the background in Pieter Brueghel’s Hunters in the Snow, 1565.

Karel Doing follows the route taken by his uncle Ed Huis in ‘t Veld, who was executed in 1942 by Japanese forces on the Indonesian island of Tarakan. In this intimate travelogue, Doing visits the harbours where the mail ships stopped on their way to the Dutch Indies (Amsterdam, Genoa, Port Said) and films in Jakarta, Surabaya, Borneo and the oil-rich island of Tarakan. Fragments from his uncle’s letters, archival footage from the extensive Eye Filmmuseum collection and the director’s diary are combined in a fascinating mix.

She risks everything to save her politically imprisoned husband - and sets herself free. The Birmingham Opera Company's production set in an enormous circus tent and mixing professional and amateur performers powerfully explores what oppression means today. The story of the old Russians began in the XVI century, when the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, supported by the Czar, imposed religious reforms in Russia. Those who have refused to obey were brutally persecuted and forced to seek refuge in Siberia or in faraway places. Many hidden in Europe, and some of them settled down in China, Japan, America and Australia. The Russian Old Believers Community that settled down in Romania is one of the most numerous. The film explores the extraordinary power of this community to preserve their language, customs and religion, finding in their faith in God the source of strength to resist. This film tries to render the patriarchal air of the medieval Russia, from which these people came.
