Cinematic Era: 2002 Vintage

73-year-old Paula Gruber is a midwife of the old school. In her community near Mühldorf, she has helped deliver almost all of the village's residents, and she can still remember each of the approximately 6,000 births. For twenty years, she worked with her mother in her maternity home—mostly around the clock and without a day off. After her mother's death, she was one of the first to start performing home births in the early 1980s, initially for eco-warriors, anthroposophists, dropouts, and women's rights activists. Paula is still working today in her daughter's midwifery practice, which is now in its sixth generation of bringing future Obertaufkirchen residents into the world.

We met Rashid during the summer of 2002. Like so many others, he waits, sitting on the sand, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the lights of the English coast shine. Like every evening, he hopes to cross to the other side. But, on the beach at Sangatte, only the days pass, and these men continue to wait, on the threshold of a new life.

A hotel room. A bed. A man and woman having a postcoital cigarette. She – a famous singer and he, the hotel’s security guard. The guard turns to the camera and starts recounting the unfolding of their story, from the moment they met up, to when the woman turns up dead, lying naked on the bathroom floor.

Wilderness and Spirit includes the first recorded footage of the Katahdin 100 Run of the Penobscot people, and the only footage of Earl Shaffer (the first person to ever complete an Applachian Trail Thru Hike) revisiting his historic climb up Katahdin on the 50th anniversary of his achievement. Huey's celebrated film brings together the writings of Henry David Thoreau, the paintings of Frederic Church and Marsden Hartley, interviews with Baxter State Park staff, Governor Baxter's descendants, Lost on a Mountain in Maine subject Donn Fendler, the stories, dances, and music of the Penobscot people, the recollections of Millinocket residents, and the hikers and climbers of Katahdin.

Two people are standing, shooting each other. They move around Central Park (New York), on opposite sidewalks, separated by the street. One has the park for background whereas the other slides in front of the buildings. Each moment of this journey is recorded from two opposite point of view. What units these points of view separates them, the frontier between internal territory and external territory is created.

On March 31, 2002, the filmmaker Samir Addallah joined Yasser Arafat's headquarters besieged by the Israeli army. He entered Moqata with a civilian mission for the protection of the Palestinian people and thought, like most of his companions, to make only a short stay of a few hours. But he stayed there for more than a month, until the siege was lifted, sharing with the close guard of the president of the Palestinian National Authority, 200 of his faithful and the members of the civilian mission, precarious living conditions, lack of food, electricity, the tension of explosions, intimidation from an unequal military and psychological face-to-face.

The opera tells the story of an elderly dandy, who is thoroughly cured from his desire to get married and thus hands over his young lady to her actual lover a tale as old as comedy itself. Donizetti however, being the master of cryptic comedy, extends this traditional "buffa" subject matter to a character comedy. His characters are not merely archetypes; they develop their individual profile throughout the differentiated and diversified plot. This work shines with musical wit, expressed in numerous coloraturas, cavatinas and duets.
