"Sol LeWitt: 4 Decades" presents an opportunity to accompany one of the great artists of our time on a tour of his work, from his formative years to the present. Joined by curator Gary Garrels, LeWitt offers context and motive behind his 2000 retrospective exhibition at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. A heavy emphasis is placed on LeWitt's spectacularly large scale wall drawings, for which he is best known. Filmed at The Mean Fiddler in front of a packed house, the concert is perhaps not as theatrical as the Subterranea tour, although vocalist Peter Nicholls dons makeup and a cape for the event, just like in the old days of IQ. However, the main focus of the gig is the band itself and what immediately struck me was the important role that humor plays here, which has been absent from their other concert films.
