Located in Yongning Township, Ninglang County, Lijiang Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the Mosuo are the only matrilineal society in China, where men do not marry, women do not marry, and people live with their mothers all their lives, without the marriage and family of mainstream society. The Mosuo people emphasize women over men, and there is no question of "men oppressing women" or "women oppressing men"; women and men are relaxed and at ease with their gender and sexuality, which is a rarity on earth....

This film is about the painter Sveinn Björnsson (1925-1997), and his struggles to perfect his art. Following a wide-ranging exhibition at the Kjarvalsstaðir Art Gallery in 1989, he has become tired of the fantasy style which he had been developing for thirty years. What needed to happen in order for him to create something new? What sacrifices would it involve? This film is about that struggle experienced by creative artists. The film is not a biography, or a learned review of the painter's style, but it does show a side of the man which very few see. One evening, he feels he is not alone in his studio; it feels as if some being is there who wants to help him.

SHAU Tao is a talented and self respecting prostitute as described in ancient Chinese literature, born in the Tang dynasty - a period in Chinese history known for it\'s open attitude toward women. Nevertheless, even in a period like this, it is still men who control the fate of womankind. During that period, the celebrated poet, YU Jen falls for charms of SHAU Tao. However in the long run, he still does not wish to marry her due to her social status. Having a very high esteem for herself, SHAU Tao prefers to remain single for the rest of her life rather than make sacrifice to accommodate such a situation. The plot switches back and forth from the letters sent between SHAU Tao and YU Jen\'s wife. The film reveals an undercurrent of a homoerotic relationship and the subtle relationship between three of them.

When sculptor John Greer and filmmaker Stewart Applegath began shooting, they had no destination, only a desire to journey together in a row boat with camera in hand. Over six years, they rowed a fair distance. breakSurface documents these travels, and the extent to which Greer’s world is leavened with debilitating anxiety. Greer’s powerful sculpture is visually simple, conceptually complex, but silent; he identifies with Jonathan Swift’s "man of objects" who lays out things, not words, to be understood. Applegath, however, doesn’t make this film to replace words, but by embracing them.

Prior to any other treatment, the emulsion is covered with layers of chemical products, resulting in a black filmstrip. "The black leader can be anticipated as Malevitch's white painting: a space in which everything is possible, the space of absolute potentiality and virtuality." This is because cinema, contrary to painting, gives light to its own image, via the lamp projector. This is not about covering a blank surface with forms and colors since they already exist on the black film. Whilst ALL OVER is a film made without "instrumentation" (like a camera), it also differs from direct films in that the film remains untouched by any tool (not even the hand). As in dripping, materials and color are spontaneously laid down on the film in semi-controlled gestures, which create a shower of colored dots. The soundtrack functions according to the same principle: the sound, in all its expressions, is formed using one single formal element.

This video is laden with energy very reminiscent of the late 80's. Hell, very few vids these days have much energy to them. They all seem to be about nailing the trick - which is important - but there's also this thing called cinematography. 2nd To None has a fast pace and awesome skating. The intro montage is stunning. Filmed in the warehouse, it features the team sessioning everything from the top of a forklift to jumping gaps from one product rack to another. They pile stuff high and go wild on every surface in the place - including a few ramps. Some street footy is edited in as well. This vid is so well done, it's insane. Each rider has a part, some of which is in the warehouse, but most is out on the streets. They mix in some skits and other random stuff. There's a "Chariots of Fire" routine in which they push - in super slow-mo - doing a variety of tricks while trying to sabotage each other's runs.
