Global music fans will be captivated by the performances of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, a celebrated Afro-Cuban rumba group, and Desandann, a 10-member a cappella choir that sings in Haitian Creole.

Then, we are presented with the actual movie itself, it starts with an extreme long shot of a scenic background which then fades away overlapping the next shot of a girl walking along the beach side, she sees a table with an extremely white sheet and a letter placed on the table, she reads it out loud and suddenly a computer screen is superimposed onto the sea, and we are taken back into the 4th of November 1932.

Stereo consists of thirty 30-seconds structures filmed in super-8mm, video8 and dv. The 30 drones are all titled, numbered and conceived to work as autonomous organisms as well as part of a whole narrative machine; these boxes contain fiction, stolen-images, still lifes, found footage and documentaries fragments.

Certainly, living conditions are difficult, especially through the harsh winters, but a harmonious solidarity and emotional serenity reigns among them. In the community of Casa Sarti, however, a serious problem is making itself felt. Parents of once young children are now seeing their offspring grow up wanting something more than the hasty education dispensed by the parental school. Things their parents rejected are now a source of fascination. Should the children be enrolled in a real school elsewhere, which would mean leaving the mountains and giving up an original way of life? Ultimately, what is at stake here is the community’s very existence.

Norstein stated that it took 1.5 years to hand-draw and animate this sequence

In 2000, which was ‘Ensor Year’, the installation artist Guillaume Bijl made a short fictitious found-footage film entitled ‘James Ensor in Oostende ca. 1920’, which shows the painter at this resort with his friends. We see them having a drink, strolling in the arcades of the Thermae Palace and sitting on the beach. Bijl’s meticulous choice of locations, belle époque dress (including bathing costumes) and his cinematographically perfect imitation of the rather jerky black & white images, as well as the patina and the perfectly imitated scratches on the film emulsion, all resulted in a perfect replica: an apparently forgotten roll of film from the days of silent film. Bijl himself classifies this faultless slice of life, one of his rare excursions into film and video, under ‘cultural tourism’, one of the elements of his work in which he popularizes cultural history subjects and reduces them to clichés for the general public.
