The film profiles the little-known story of Chinese immigrants Joseph and Mary Tape, who tried to enroll their 8-year-old U.S.-born daughter in San Francisco’s all-white Spring Valley School in September 1884. The principal refused to admit Mamie Tape, citing school board policy barring Chinese children from attending the city’s public schools. The Tape family sued the principal and took the case to the California Supreme Court in 1885. School officials defended their position by arguing that the California constitution declared Chinese to be “dangerous to the well-being of the state,” and thus the city had no obligation to educate Chinese students.

The third episode of No Ghost, Just a Shell, a collective project of Philippe Parreno, Pierre Huyghe and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Annlee is a contemporary digital apparition, designed by a firm to embody externally assigned emotions. As she articulates her thoughts, viewers confront the fragility of a hybrid consciousness aware of its own impermanence. Shaped by the 3D animation aesthetics of Philippe Parreno, Pierre Huyghe, and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster—who previously collaborated in 1998 on a landmark ARC exhibition—Annlee reflects ongoing dialogues with the manga Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow and its cinematic adaptations. The work interrogates artificial intelligence, the limits of authorship, and the transient nature of creations rooted in emerging technologies.
Commissioned for the Purple Magazine-curated 'Elysian Fields' exhibition at the Pompidou Center, Occupational Hazards (Les Risques du Métier) arose from a fundamental constraint. For budget, insurance, and scheduling reasons, filming was to be kept within the Pompidou Center itself, using the institution's own media production crew, whose normal job is to document exhibitions, openings, lectures, and other museum events. The star architecture of the Rogers-Piano building, with interiors recently renovated in a bland euro-corporate space-age vernacular, became the generator of a Perecian house-constructed fiction. The locations were basic narrative units, as the spaces of the Pompidou went looking for other fictions besides their design, function, or security.

This is the story of the Organization of Rural Environmentalists (OCE), founded in 1998, and its success in slowing deforestation. This video and sound installation is a portrait of a young girl. It shares, however, little of the poised and contemplative nature of Munch’s Self Portrait with Cigarette (1895) which it references. A young girl looks down at us from a flat video screen. With an air of arrogance she holds her right hand loosely across her chest, a burning cigarette balanced between her fingers. A remote control, within the grasp of her left, emerges from the deep darkness of the background. Defiantly, the young girl points it towards us, and with it she takes charge of our viewing experience. Loud bursts of drum ‘n base and garage music (2000) erupt at intervals from the speakers behind the viewer. portrait with cigarette captures the restless spirit of its subject which is at odds with the composed and often timeless character of the traditional painted portrait. The event and the work terminate when the cigarette burns out.

He is now in the city where the commercial culture fills everywhere. People lead their lives on a floating and swelling materialized mountain without knowing that the bottom is nowhere. A pervasive flood of images and forms have been pouring in from every direction, overfilling his eyes and ears, leaving him too powerless to make his own judgments. When nights approach the city with colorful neon lights, he feels he is becoming a puppet controlled by desire and temptation, playing different roles in the noisy city life.
