Historically, when communities heard about plans for a new prison the outcry was "not in my backyard." Times have changed. With an unprecedented 1.2 million people in prisons and 203 new correctional facilities built in small towns from 1990 to 1997, prisons have become a rural growth industry and their acquisition a conscious economic development strategy. Yes, in My Backyard explores the multi-layered dependence of one upstate New York farming town on the prison industry, and probes the profound implications of this dependence for the keepers and the kept, and for society at large.

The opening scene in Cigar invites us into an air-conditioned office somewhere in the world. With all the delicate and smooth gestures of a connoisseur, a middle-aged man in a suit takes an expensive cigar out of a long, silver holder in a black leather case. Using the small guillotine of a cigar cutter, he carefully prepares it to be enjoyed. He gives it to his visitor and helps him light it. Their hands touch each other gently, the cigar is lit. With a nearly obscene concentrated enjoyment, the visitor smokes away in a sofa while the other man looks at him intensely. Despite the fact that the men in Annika Larsson’s works in many ways are caricatures of the typical Western male as a symbol of power, it would be wrong to say that she examines or critiques male power. It is more the peculiar erotic tension in apparently banal tasks that is important here.

Edaville Revisited describes the sale and movement of most of the Edaville equipment to the new Maine Narrow Gauge Museum in Portland, and the short-lived 1997 revival of Edaville itself. The program includes beautifully-photographed scenes take during the legendary Railfan Weekend in October 1991, when 2-4-4T 7 was correctly lettered for the Bridgton & Harrison Railroad for the first time in 50 years! The little engine pulled a special photo freight through spectacular fall colors. Coverage of the final 1991 Holiday Spectacular at Edaville is then shows, followed by the equipment move to Portland and the 1997 Edaville Cranberry Festival, complete with superb helicopter views of the little trains in action. A tour of the Portland museum featuring trackside, onboard, and in-cab views, along with some unusual night video sequences and a colorful fireworks display, completes the program.

"The Final Invasion" reveals the amazing struggle of America's "Forgotten War" with Great Britain in 1812. The 58 minute video offers a general overview on the causes of the War of 1812 and then concentrates on a key battle that changed the course of American history in 1814. Shot on-location in Great Britain, Canada and the US "The Final Invasion" features leading authors, re-enactments, previously unpublished diaries and newly discovered documents. Sophisticated 3-d animation reveal how a "rag-tag" American force of less than 3,500 soldiers, sailors, militia and citizens defeated over 14,000 of his majesty's fiercest troops, veterans of the Duke of Wellington's army, fresh from victory over Napoleon in Spain.

In 1997, Vinhranovsky resumed his project to create a “cinematic encyclopaedia of Ukraine” by securing funding from a private investor. He began filming the documentary “Hetman Sagaidachny,” facing concerns about the investor’s commitment and the lack of paintings from Petro Sagaidachny’s era. Overcoming these challenges, he found relevant paintings in Kyiv museums, confiscated in the 1930s. Filming, which was slow, concluded in April 1999.

A documentary film on uranium mining and its deadly impacts on the tribal people living near the Jadugoda mine, mill and tailings dam, in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand (India). Unsafe mining, milling and tailings management by UCIL in this area for almost 30 years has resulted in excessive radiation, contamination of water, land and air, destruction of the local ecology, and lead for to genetic mutation, and slow death for the people of the region. The film attempts to depict the gross misuse of power by the authorities in displacing the original inhabitants of the region, the utter lack of concern for internationally accepted norms and safety precautions in the handling of uranium and its by-products, and their callousness of its disastrous impact on the people and the region.

For twenty years I lived in the same apartment in Paris. The “landscape” that I was looking at through the window became my home, my living space. It was also a kind of calendar, a watch: the passage of time, the passing of the seasons. When I left, I made this film to physically keep with me images, details, lights, colors, textures whose sight and existence were essential to me. I filmed static shots by inserting blacks of varying duration between them. I superimposed different shots six times on the same film, changing their duration and that of the blacks. Each layer therefore has its own rhythm determined in advance. In the end, the series of images fit together like segments of memory.

In Broken Mirror a hammer hovers precariously, ready to break the camera’s lens; instead, it shatters what is revealed to be a mirror. Set in various locations throughout Beijing, the work charts a path through the changing cityscape. With each action, mirror fragments reflecting one scene give way to reveal another. Everyday street views of shoppers at an open-air market, historical landmarks, or sites of protest like Tiananmen Square open onto each other in a disorienting loop of illusion and reality.
