For the 1999 Venice Biennale, Alÿs created an unofficial performance for the occasion, titled Duett. The piece begins with Alÿs entering Venice by train while fellow Belgian artist Honoré d’O landed at the airport, and each man is carrying one half of a tuba. After drifting through the labyrinth of streets, they eventually met three days later and reassembled the musical instrument. The work is emblematic of Alÿs’s exploration of estranged or misplaced halves striving for reconciliation.

The documentary Path of the Bees demonstrates, with its ethnographic restlessness, an orthodox point of view in the staging and in the final result. The way in which he portrays the native people of the Chiapas jungle, disregarding the explanatory voiceover and getting carried away by a visual narrative made of details; It makes me perseverantly document the vegetation of the place, the constructions, the gestures and the looks of those who inhabit it.

In 1968, Taitung Hongye Little League defeated Japan's Wakayama Little League 7-0, which was a legendary story of that era. The barefooted children of the Bunun tribe used stones as balls and sticks as sticks to win Taiwan the glory of defeating Japan. But what's the truth behind the legend? Where is the legendary young player now? This film goes into the fog of the premature death of more than half of the players, not only the stigma of impostor, but also the lament of underappreciated talent, and the baseball dream of the next generation of children.

Filmed in Patmos in May 1999, this is Robert Lax’s last year in Greece, roughly his last year of life. For 21 minutes you see only Lax’s head and his right hand, which holds a wooden staff of sorts (a walking stick or ... a broomstick?!). He wears a navy blue knit hat. The only movement is in his eyes, and ever so slight movements of his head. Lax does not look at the camera, his eyes are mostly downcast, but he is awake and aware, watching and waiting, and you are drawn into his profound stillness. All of those who were able to meet Lax during his lifetime consider it a particular stroke of fortune. They say that from that point on he became part of their bodies and souls, as though they had met a true saint. My Eye Your Eye is like being in the presence of holiness. For 20 minutes. Watching and waiting. I've always wanted to know better what Bob Lax was like - how he was. This film does it.

Integrating archival sources with pseudo-documentary fabrications, Jesse Lerner’s Ruins delves into the tangled legacies of Mesoamerican antiquarianism, revealing how archaeologists, art historians, and museum curators have, for centuries, fashioned various theories about pre-Columbian civilizations from the stuff of colonialist fantasies and ingenious forgeries. Structured around five key vignettes in this history, Lerner’s film combines travelogues, newsreels, and educational films to examine the claims of various experts like early-20th century “dean of the Mayanists” Sylvanus G. Morley and archaeologist Michael Coe, longtime curator of Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Ten years have passed since we made the film “Crossroad Street”, about a small street in the suburbs of the city of Riga. Now we’ve come back. Perhaps it was a sense of duty, perhaps nostalgia that brought us back – who knows? Perhaps it was both. Daiga, Aldis, Osis – they’re all our people. The first film had an impact on both the filmmakers and the residents of Crossroad Street. We found friends whom we want to meet again and again. Society has become more prosperous, several value systems coexist side-by-side. People often live in these systems as though they were in different worlds that never meet. We felt that the world inhabited by our people is sinking into oblivion, and so we wanted to show that it still has its own turbulence, that Crossroad Street resembles Latvia’s palm – the place where a fortune teller can see the lines of its destiny.

Written by Ferhan Şensoy, Şu An Mutfaktayım (I'm in the Kitchen Right Now) is his 30th play, conceived for Derya Baykal as a one-woman show. Baykal's everyday life, as seen through Şensoy's eyes, gradually becomes generalized, offering a satirical view of contemporary Turkey through Şensoy's lens. The play bridges the local and the universal, engaging the audience in playful banter through its musical comedy.

De Kom's grandfather was a slave; as a child, he heard stories about what the white Dutch had done to the Black Surinamese during the time of slavery. Throughout his life, he resisted the stigma of inferiority. He was active in the anti-colonial movement, married a white Dutch woman, and, after his forced emigration to the Netherlands, joined the resistance in 1940–1945. Through the life story of Anton de Kom, aided by conversations with his children among others, an unknown part of the history of Suriname is told.

Around 1515, Master Mathis added painted panels arranged as double wings to a sculpted altarpiece created twenty years earlier for the convent-hospital of Isenheim in Alsace. Dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, the work was intended for patients afflicted by ergotism—the “St. Anthony’s fire”—a scourge of poorly nourished Europe that the Order of the Antonines sought to combat under the spiritual protection of their healing patron saint.

Shitao, one of the most skilled painters of his time, was deeply imbued with Buddhist spirituality, as he was forced to take refuge in monasteries from a very young age. His painting relies on the simplicity of line and the pure white of the paper. Here, a mountain landscape is rendered in ink on rice paper mounted on a silk scroll. Beneath the apparent simplicity of the subject unfolds a whole universe of hidden correspondences that one must learn to decipher.
