Daniel Petrie scripted and directed this Canadian-British film, an adaptation of the memorable 1957 Brooklyn-based novel by Brooklyn-born Bernard Malamud, author of The Natural. During the Depression, drifter Frank Alpine (Gil Bellows) and hobo Ward Minogue (Jaimz Woolvett) rob the small Bober family grocery. Minogue attacks frail Morris Bober (Armin Mueller-Stahl) because he has little money. Later, guilt sends Alpine back to the store, where he goes unrecognized and is hired by Bober as an assistant, despite the objections of Ida Bober (Joan Plowright). I produced the piece «Onko» in 1997. I cut super 8 film loops into measured lengths. I projected these, randomly trapping frames in the gate on each cycle. The startled expression of the passenger and the incremental increase of degradation hint at the subsidence of memories over time. What we see and project clearly in our mind today, will degrade and collapse. Memory, like film, degrading with each review, accumilating detritus, emotional dust and scratches, confusing and blurring the credibility of personal experience.

From the legendary director who redefined the zombies in film industry (George A. Romero), comes a bold new vision that blurs the line between game and horror cinema. Follow the camera behind the scenes of one of the most talked-about TV commercials ever made, created in collaboration with Brad Renfro and some of Hollywood’s top talent. Based on the world of Resident Evil, the hit survival horror game that had already terrified millions since its debut in 1996, this commercial heralds the arrival of its highly anticipated sequel. Breaking a two-year silence, director Romero returns with a haunting production of cinematic ambition. With a staggering budget of over 150 million yen (more than one million USD), the shoot took place on a chilling replica of a Los Angeles police station, transformed into the shadowy world of Raccoon City.

Adapted from a novella by James Strahs (the author of “Queer and Alone”, as well as the Wooster Group’s play, “North Atlantic”), this unfinished 1997 film from the Wooster Group was first shown as part of the 1997 Whitney Biennial. Aside from a screening as part of Anthology’s tribute to the Group in 2012, it has rarely been seen since. A tale of smuggling and survivalists that adopts the tone and visual style of film noir, but with a narrative logic all its own, it stars Willem Dafoe as Jack Straw, a small-time operator who ran a “pharmaceutical outfit” before an accident changed everything. A rare instance of an extended moving-image work by the Wooster Group that was created independently of their theatrical productions, WRONG GUYS is a fascinating and little-seen work. — Anthology Film Archives

Riding the Rails offers a visionary perspective on the presumed romanticism of the road and cautionary legacy of the Great Depression. The filmmakers relay the experiences and painful recollections of these now-elderly survivors of the rails. Forced to travel more by economic necessity than the spirit of adventure, the film's subjects dispel romantic myths of a hobo existence and its corresponding veneer of freedom. Riding the Rails recounts the hoboes' trade secrets for survival and accounts of dank miseries, loneliness, imprisonment, death, and dispossession. Sixty years later, the filmmakers transport their subjects back to the tracks, where the surging impact of sound and movement resuscitates memories of a shattered adolescence and devastating rite of passage.
