These pictures, reproduced everywhere and in all possible forms, have become the emblems of a certain form of romantic art of the late Middle Ages. Beautiful ladies, fabulous animals, abundant flowers, sparkling colours, everything in these tapestries brings pleasure to the eyes. But once the first marvelling is past, the visitor asks questions. What are these blasons that are so obstinately repeated ? What scenes exactly are these hieratic ladies playing ? Why is there each time a lion and a unicorn ? What do these trees, flowers, various animals scattered all over the surface mean ? And who had these splendours woven ? And for what use? Which artist designed the models ? Questions burst out everywhere. Several of them have surprising answers.

This single-channel installation alternates between 20 seconds of images capturing private activities and expressions of people in front of the mirror in washrooms and 10 seconds of black screen. (Installation is intended to be viewed in a venue with walls covered in wallpaper and a video screen hidden behind a double-sided mirror on one of the walls. The reflection of the viewer's face will appear on the mirror whenever the video is faded into a black screen.)

Three-channel installation. The first video, captured with a stationary camera, depicts the floating and sinking movement of a balloon; the second video moves in conjunction with the legs of the person carrying the balloon; the third video is in black and white and captures the vision through a surveillance camera attached to the hand of the person carrying the balloon.

What happens in the background, at the edge, and in the last frames of a banal, everyday filming? I tried to find out by blowing up Super-8 to 35mm. A crosswalk, pedestrians, cars—everything becomes a grainy stain on a thick blanket of snow. In this film, I used a particular printing method so that the grain moves (forward or in depth) without changing the scale of the image, an approach I would like to pursue.

Authors of the film make the journey both real and mystical through the Buryatia. They are following their character lama Danzan — the spiritual leader and member of parliament of his mysterious country called Little Tibet. Lama Danzan is modern incarnation of the Agvan Dorzhiev, who was the teacher of Dalai-lama XIII and played an important role in the struggle between Britain, China and Russia for the dominance in Tibet at the beginning of XX century. Today lama Danzan is doing everything possible overcoming natural and mystic obstacles to build magic spokes, suburgans, which are believed by him and his followers to change the life of the country for the better .
