English poet, engraver, painter and mystic William Blake is famed for his symbolic expressions of religious visions. Culled from 250 hours of footage, Referendum is an emotional portrait of a profoundly divided society. On May 3, 1945, with Hitler already dead and Hamburg and Berlin having surrendered, the Royal Air Force launched its last major air raid. The target was a collection of ships in the Bay of Kiel and Lübeck. The largest ships, the floating concentration camp transports Cap Arcone and Thielbeck, were targeted by the bombers and low-flying aircraft: this horrific mistake cost the lives of over 700 prisoners - the greatest maritime disaster of all time. The film returns to the sites of the events, to Neuengamme, where the prisoners were previously interned, to Lübeck, where they were embarked, to Neustadt, where they were crammed onto the Cap Arcona. The prehistory of the last great luxury liner is reconstructed, the launching, the voyage of the Queen of the South Atlantic, as the most important extra in the UFA production: The Sinking of the Titanic.

Berlin Film School graduation feature by mainland-born Ma Yingli. Two very different young women attempt to cope with the cultural changes sweeping their hometown of Beijing, China in the late 1990s. Xiaoxia has just returned from prolonged study overseas. She is a musician, and is shocked to see how money-hungry everyone now seems to be. When she begins running her brother's nightclub, she almost starts having a good (and successful) time, until the still-puritanical authorities close it down after she permits an avant-garde group to give a nude performance. Linlin never left town, but her studies at art school were cut short by official disapproval of her affair with a non-Chinese foreigner. A rich German arranges for her photography to be exhibited in Munich, and she is eager to leave the country to see the show. The two women's lives briefly connect at the nightclub, but are otherwise separate.

May Day in Alma Ata, 1979. Valera, Karim and Jacob are a crew of hard-partying, drug-taking teenagers looking for kicks during their spring holiday, and they break into the bar at the Highland ice rink and steal an electric guitar. When Valera's dad finds the guitar, he turns his son over to the police, who brutalize him and leave him severely wounded on the outskirts of town. Karim and Jacob kill Valera's father, then hide their friend and do their best to keep him alive.

Kajol is a star actress in Indian movies. I discovered a strange scene when I was watching a video of a movie she was in. In one scene of a musical, Kajol throws a dove into the sky, which then falls to the ground. This would not be OK on a Japanese movie set. So I thought about the differences between Indian and Japanese movies. By the way, I read in a book that there is a goddess of cinema in India. I guess she protects Indian movies. So, is there no god of cinema in Japan? Oh, but not of cinema, there is a god of dance. I started writing a screenplay with this goddess, Ame-no-Uzume, as the main character, but the Yatagarasu, the guide for nation building, fell to the ground, and the story ended happily.

Dois Dragões follows a small dog on an adventure in a Chinese restaurant, where its owner (Ana Zanatti) goes to have dinner with her daughter (Beatriz Batarda). Terrorised by the possibility of being turned into Chop Suey, the dog passes a frightening night, running through the restaurant and hearing the telenovela-like conversations taking place at the different tables. With the camera placed in the dog’s perspective, this short film acts as an amusing panorama of Lisbon society at the end of the 20th century.

The resulting film is a slighlty hypnotic and open-ended parable about coming of age in a shifty world of slipping terms. LAST LOST is a silent film in spirit, trying to speak without words, like some dreams. (...) The primate of Heller's confabulation brings both peace and a sword. The reviving spirits that he releases are not easily compatible with the order of things, and such newfound awareness doesn't necessarily provide the keys to the kingdom but rather a profound uneasiness with the staple amusements and short circuitry of this provisional world.
