A woman with iridescent eyes clad in a lustrous white costume, while futuristic like a cyborg, her gestures are somehow mystical, like those of a shrine maiden. Her meditative singing voice accompanies her toying with a glass orb, transporting the audience to a mysterious state.

Profile of the American sculptor Claes Oldenburg. Although born in Sweden, he was brought up in the USA and moved to New York in the late 1950s. Contemporaries Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist reminisce about their experiences with the artist. Art dealer Arne Glimcher, museum director Tom Krens, and critic Hilton Kramer, among others, discuss with the writer Coosje van Bruggen, to whom the artist is married, the development of Oldenburg's career from the early cardboard and plaster pieces to the large-scale public works executed over the past twenty years. Oldenburg is filmed drawing in the couple's Manhattan studio, while van Bruggen and Oldenburg together retrace the conceptualisation of a recent urban project, the `Torn Notebook'. The latter part of the programme is devoted to the complex installation of the nine-metre long `Giant Soft Shuttlecock' in the Guggenheim Museum in New York in October 1995, for the exhibition entitled `Claes Oldenburg: An Anthology'.

Only fifty years after the Holocaust, the world has allowed another genocide to take place, this time in Rwanda. In April 1994, the international community sat by and watched while a million Tutsi men, women and children were massacred in the central African nation. Sitting on a Volcano, the first volume in the three-part Rwanda series, follows the exodus of hundreds of thousands of Hutus who fled Rwanda to take refuge in neighbouring countries. One year after the slaughter, they find themselves trapped beween gangs of Rwandan war criminals in control of the refugee camps and their country's new masters, who show little interest in reconciliation. Sitting on a Volcano criticizes the international community, which continues to feed the killers in the refugee camps and refuses to acknowledge human rights violations in Rwanda.

"One of the best films of this year's short film program, Sanguedolce's 59 minute movie is an audacious story that takes a unique journey into its own heart of darkness. With a nod to Francis Ford Coppola, Joseph Conrad and The Price is Right host Bob Barker, it's a story that has its own epic quality taking us from a small Sicilian village to the jungles of Thailand."

Cat and Bird in Peace is a real-time recording of a cat and a bird sitting in a cage. Nothing happens, however...from time to time the bird looks to the left and then to the right, and the cat sometimes looks up. The animals seem to ignore one another. In contrast to what one would expect there is no element of suspense in this normally dangerous situation.

The video shows the artist almost obsessively writing an autobiographical text in French onto her own hand, until the repeated overlays of words come to resemble a mysterious, intricate, Arabesque pattern. The process of writing functions as a mark of identity, a determination to write her own subjective experience into representational narratives, to inscribe her own fiction of identity. "Self recognition changes according to the condition of mental health. When the person is not healthy, the image of oneself looks distorted like the ones reflected on a spoon. Maybe screaming happens when the gap between the ideal self and the reflected self is too big. The person is retrieved when he/she forgets about the ideal." - Tamami Asada
