In the desert of Namibia, life has always been a harsh struggle enriched by a feeling of oneness with the land. The people of Ova Himba were cattle herders, who followed the rains and knew where to find water and vegetation. They migrated between their encampments, the women repairing the huts with cow dung. Chief Kamasuthu, his mother, children and three wives always lived in the manner prescribed by their ancestors. They ground ocre with butterfat and herbs and decorated their bodies with this deep-hued mixture. This honored the fine cattle of their ancient gods. The drought and the war in Angola forced them into shanty towns and took away their dignity. Their children grew scornful of the old ways. This ancient, nomadic tribe, which had been untouched by the 20th century, now faces an uncertain future.

There are many memories of childhood that have slipped through the cracks. Most that I can recollect were of the differences in myself in comparison to the others around. Taken away at one week of age from my Indian community and given to a white foster family, my experience of the authentic Indian and where my placement is, within this dream of authenticity, comes from an infected locale.

Squareworld has a stark, minimal narrative: a drug-addicted man kidnaps a young woman from the hills, holds her prisoner and eventually kills her and disposes of her body. We learn almost nothing about either the victim or her tormentor, and the film contains no moral judgments –Tony Rayns

A collage-letter to friends I lost, or who drifted away. A film about the end of adolescence in the 1990s, set between Athens and Brussels. Fragments and snippets of memory, stitched together in the way memory actually works: through the flow of emotions. Letters inspired by those my friends sent me in Brussels, Super 8 footage I shot myself, photographs, Video 8 material, and newly filmed standalone scenes. The final medium is 16mm film.

The S/N installation/performance project began in 1992, took its title from the “signal/noise ratio” of electronic communications and applied it to the dissonance surrounding contemporary social issues — sex inequality, racial and ethnic minority discrimination, politics of gender, HIV/AIDS and sexualities — in an effort to go beyond the theatrics of art toward activist engagement and community outreach. The conceptual author, director and performer of the work, Teiji Furuhashi, who came out on stage as gay and HIV-positive and died of AIDS-related septicemia on 29 October 1995, characterized S/N as “struggle.”

But within their own lifetime, they have watched governments “manage” the fishery into a state of crisis. Filmmaker Barb Cranmer, a member of the ‘Na̱mǥis First Nation, explores the rich fishing traditions of the Sto:lo, Heiltsuk, and ‘Na̱mǥis peoples of Canada’s West Coast in Ƚaxwesa Wa—Strength of the River. It is a true reality account of the bizarre pizza party which befell a group of three friends. They could not have expected nor would they have wished to see as much of the strange and surreal in their party host as they would see that day. For them an idyllic party invitation became a totally bizarre outing. The events of that 1995 day would later be revealed with the discovery of one of the most bizarre pizza parties video footage in the annals of American history.
