Cinematic Era: 1993 Vintage

A poor young man lives in an old house he owns in one of the popular areas, He refuses to sell his house and is looking for any honest work but is forced to clean cars in front of one of the large sports clubs.

The piece is dedicated to Fukuoka filmmaker Yoshio Fukuma, who was a very good friend of Sakurai's. Making good use of bulb shooting – extended exposure – which was Fukuma's specialty, responding to the light and shadow of water and fire, the moon and the sun, Sakurai traces the historic spots of Kyoto, his living ground. Contradicting with the glorious music, the view is a total lamentation and can be taken as a requiem toward the sudden loss of Yoshio Fukuma. With no after-treatments, this non-edited shooting creates a complete harmony of distinguished camerawork and solid lyricism, offering full satisfaction for Sakurai's original and extraordinary talent.

An angry husband comes home to find his wife having an affair with another man. He kills her. He kills her lover. He kills an innocent witness who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately for him, his murder victims come back as zombies. And these zombies proceed to play a lot of very nasty tricks on him (razor blades in spaghetti anyone). Will he survive?

Eclat is a fascinating documentary about the work. We witness rehearsals by the Netherlands' Nieuw Ensemble, hear comments about the piece from the composer, conductor Ed Spanjaard and some of the musicians, and we see a full performance of the work. Eclat ("To burst out") is a beautiful example of the strangely lyrical pointillist style that Boulez had inherited from Anton von Webern. Aural pinwheels and shifting musical kaleidoscopes with stunning instrumental color is the only way to verbally describe what must be heard to be understood. This is definitely not for those who hate "modern" music. For those who respond to contemporary music, this piece is masterful and this film is a must-see!

Everything you see and hear is a toy box of horror. Like a flood of light, this collage of glittering images continues uninterrupted. The images, which unfold rhythmically without gaps, maintain a single image, from the elaborate props to the nondescript room scenes. There is a story to be told, but more than that, what emerges naturally is the smell of death and night. The smell is not only dark and frightening but also innocent, like a child's idea of mischief being carried out. This is because he has the sense to refer to Frank Zappa's "Lumpy Grape" as a reference. The original music is also pleasant, reaching the ear like a whisper of light particles.

Now they have to make their way back to the village on foot. This means two more days of camping out. To make matters worse, there's another lunatic prowling the woods. When he spies the beautiful oriental Jasmine, he has a flashback to his tour duty in Vietnam. Unable to distinguish reality from delusion, sees Jasmine as a Viet Cong. He captures her, ties her up and subjects her to a cruel interrogation. Julie is soon captured and treated in a similar manner. What started out as a fun camping trip has turned out to be an ordeal of bondage and terror.

Water into Fire is a mix of documentation of his performative piece and other scenes. In this piece, the artist continues his search seen in his earlier works for identity and placement in Canada's multicultural and First Nations arena. Longboy outs himself as a First Nations FAG, who is living with HIV and abruptly severs attached preconceptions of two-spirited peoples, forcing the First Nation's community to address him rather than the disease. In a contemplative and meditative search, Longboy recollects how HIV/AIDS has affected him and the community around him, revealing a strength through loss.

Let us imagine isolation, fear, almost generic fear, and ancient, pervasive, self-generated. This fear becomes a system. The little man, forced, struggled to maintain his minimal right, the right to survive. But today, this crushed, squeezed, almost destroyed little man stands on the border, the one that separates— or unites—the old system and the new, the world of competition, where survival is precisely through profitability, profit. Then the little man becomes the hero, the model, the hero of this almost demonological thriller.

Short documentary film for Oriental Time • Living Space directed by Jiang Yue. This was a "demo" that Jiang made for Living Space's new producer, Chen Mang, after the departure of the original producer, Lu Wangping. From the example set by this film, Living Space thereafter developed the slogan: "Telling the stories of ordinary people.”

Shot at Euro-Disneyland just after it opened in 1993, FAERIE-MONITION became an essay on the nature of this "cultural Chernobyl." With a dense soundtrack and evocative optically-printed imagery, this film creates an atmosphere without needing explicit explanations or voice-over.

Janka Vidová made this video while studying in the New Media Studio of Michael Bielický. The artist borrowed an analogue video camera from the studio and filmed her visit to the region of her hometown in Slovakia. Using visual effects and instrumental music, she edited the resulting footage into a poetic film that captures the dreamy atmosphere of the snowy countryside.

The second in Wang Haibing’s ‘Three Families’ trilogy (which also includes 1991’s Northern Tibetan Family and 2000’s Days in the Mountains) -- all of which won the Sichuan International TV Festival “Golden Panda” award in their years of premiere. This is the story of an ordinary farmer in the mountainous Xuanhan County, Sichuan Province, a place called Fankuai. The river flowing through Fankuai is called Qianhe, and upstream of the Qianhe River is the town of Bailixia. There is no road or electricity in the Bailixia area; and the only means of transportation is boats. The mountain people use the boat to carry their goods and freight their living supplies. Nowadays, though, a new road leads up to the mountain area — the boatmen’s livelihood may end with the opening of this road, and so the boatman and his family are faced with new choices.

This brilliant little piece was made with no camera or emulsion. Scraps of old curtains were glued onto clear 35mm film stock, providing both image and optical soundtrack. That's it! The delay between the image and sound reflects the physical gap (usually compensated for) between a projector's lens and its optical sound head. Gardine Sing Sing is clearly musically structured, the sound that a piece of fabric makes what decided where it appears in the film. Otherwise, it's very similar in execution to Brakhage's Mothlight.

Hollywood Rock Festival 1993

This documentary comprises a series of interviews with Israeli soldiers who served in the Occupied Territories during the intifada and raises the moral dilemmas involved in warfare against a civilian population. The soldiers, of various ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds, recount brutal incidents in which they beat, shot at and tortured the Palestinian population. Their reflections and ambivalence, sometimes to the point of extreme self-reproach, draw a bleak picture of Israel’s occupying practices vis-à-vis the Palestinians. This impression is accentuated by the black background against which the interviews are conducted, reminiscent of a prisoner’s cell. This is one of the most unsettling films made on this issue and it was never broadcast in Israel.
