Cinematic Era: 1990 Vintage

An unsuspecting Earthling encounters visitors from a distant planet whose sexually charged society features dominant females and subservient males.

A doctor arrives in a remote village where the superstitious villagers all believe a string of grisly deaths is being caused by a Phi Pop ghost, a spirit which infects victims with a desire to consume raw meat whilst eating its guts.

The first film in the 'Japanese Archipelago' series. This is a video that shows images of places with explanations of ghost zones such as Maruyama-cho, which is called the birthplace of the famous candy store ghost, and the Chichibu sacred site Eifukuji Temple, which is said to be a zone of fear and haunted by ghosts.

The production is based on the famous novella of the same name by M. Kukučín. The author knew his characters well, their joys, pains and desires, and his knowledge and human message are still valid today.

Billy Idol, recorded live at London's Wembley Arena, on December 22nd 1990, during the Charmed Life tour. Charmed Life was released in 1990, and a video for the single "Cradle of Love" had to be shot. Since he, Idol, was unable to walk, he was shot from the waist up. Against his doctors' advice, he also managed to make appearances to promote Charmed Life.

Roger, Neil, and Mike are horror movie fans who have a mock seance to bring Nazi psycho Max Shreck back from the dead. Unfortunately, the seance works and Shreck wreaks havoc in our time.

You Be Mother uses stop-frame animation to disrupt the traditional orders of animate and inanimate, the fluid and the solid. An hallucinatory space is set up when a frozen image of the artist’s face is projected onto weighty pieces of crockery atop a table. Ears, eyes, nose and mouth, all become spatially dislocated as a determined hand begins to reposition, decant and mix. Events unfold to the amplified sounds of grinding, pouring and stirring.

An animated short by Bruno Bozzetto which condenses the whole of human civilization into 9 minutes, focusing primarily on the human race's predilection for warfare and the vanity of war. It was an Oscar Nominee for Best Animated Short in 1991. Each piece of history is presented as a simple vignette, usually depicting a few simply-drawn characters arguing and making war, over and over again. Generally, a single figure is meant to stand in for an entire group (i.e., a single Caesar-like caricature for the entire line of Roman Emperors). There is very little spoken dialogue; instead, most of the cartoon is accompanied by a bouncy piano-driven score, which frequently changes style to suit the particular historical era. However, the score is all based around a single simple theme, to which it frequently returns in between vignettes.

Three beautiful young women, on the rebound from failed relationships, decide to take an impulsive trip to escape the oppressive atmosphere of their home town. Under the spell of magical Jamaica, they explore beautiful reefs and deserted keys au natural.

Mexican feature film

Zlatin Radev’s pixilated Canfilm (1990) from Bulgaria is a brilliant, often hilarious political allegory about tin cans that live in cartons resembling skyscrapers and are periodically relabeled by the powers that be.

This is a film made in Toronto, in memoriam, so to speak - a memory piece, a "piecing-together" of the experience of living there. The consciousness of the maker comes to sharply focused visual music - not to arrive at snapshots, as such, but rather to "sing" the city as remembered from daily living...complementary, then, to an earlier film, "Unconscious London Strata." Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2015.

Master Sergeant Collins disobeys his commander's order of retreat and is chased by the North Korean troops as he falls behind his troops. He hides inside a catholic church. Collins disguises himself as a father and turns away the North Korean soldiers when they attack. In order to save himself, the sister, and the children, Collins teaches the boys how to shoot and survive. Sister Anna is kidnapped while searching for food. The boy feels anger as North Korean soldiers kill his grandmother. North Korean soldiers shoot at the South Korean area. A boy takes a box of dynamite. While he is arguing with his friend, his younger brother, Hyuk, takes the dynamite and runs over the bridge. Soon, the North Korean bunker is in flames. At the church, the sister and the children make a desperate fight against the North Korean soldiers.

In 1915 the Russian artist Malevich declared a Black Square on a White Background an icon of his times and thus founded a new form of art, liberated from objects – Suprematism. Supported by the Bolsheviks at first, his ‘formalistic’ art was soon considered counterrevolutionary. 50 years later, in 1989, the first comprehensive Malevich retrospective outside Russia was held in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum. It is here that Barrie Gavin outlines the artist’s creative phases and his life story. In doing so, he discovers the most diverse ‘isms’ of the 20th century and one of the most significant pioneers of abstract art.

Tolpatsch is a good-natured boy who always tells the truth and has immense powers. He fishes a sword out of the lake and sets off on an adventure. After a battle with an evil fairy, Tolpatsch and his companion, a cheerful raven, arrive at the castle where a princess lives. She is not allowed to see the sun, moon or stars until she is sixteen and lives in an artificial world. Tolpatsch answers three questions about the ugliness of this world with the truth. The princess is redeemed and the two become a happy couple.

Mexican feature film

JoAnn Elam's unfinished project, EVERYDAY PEOPLE (filmed from 1979 to 1990), is based on her experiences as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Chicago (primarily the Logan Square neighborhood). Camera in hand, Elam follows co-workers as they deliver the mail throughout various Chicago neighborhoods. Elam's construction of this film-in-progress creates a lovely cadence and rhythm that transforms the repetitive motions of the postal worker -- pushing the mail cart, carrying the bag, avoiding the dogs, opening the gates, and climbing the steps to the front door -- to something poetic yet startlingly familiar. Their stories (heard mostly in voice-over) are those of everyday people who at the time struggled with issues of race and gender in relationship to their work.

“The principle of angels is that they appear and disappear in one and the same moment…now…here….at this moment…salvation…That is what I call the truth of this film, or to put it differently, its structure. There is nothing in it which wasn’t produced at that moment itself.“

Produced by the Sheffield Film Co-op for the Nottinghamshire Women’s Training Scheme, a documentary made to promote the work of this women-only training scheme to provide education and trade skills in professions not normally associated with women such as electronics, plumbing, motor mechanics and heavy goods vehicle driving. The film speaks with many of those who are employed at the centre both in regards the courses they run as well as the support they provide.
