As storms cross over an orchestra and notes fly by, a ship is sinking. While one woman sleeps, another is rescued (in her sleep?). An opera guide is said to include imaginary operas "of our lives in big format," as well as Die Valkyrie, Othello, Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Aida, Margarete von Trotta as the countess/Communist, the African Lady, Solaris, and many others. We find ourselves (that is, the female voice speaking from our position) prompted in our roles by a pair of whispering opera prompts. Though the outcome for the heroine is fatal, the ship arrives in time for Christmas, plying its way through computer graphic stars.

A personal inquiry by Richard Taylor. Thirty-six years ago documentary film-maker Richard Taylor was serving as a military police subaltern in Korea. Near to his tent they were interrogating prisoners - and sometimes they tortured them. That was the start of a lifelong concern about torture. Is it simply something which happens under military dictatorships and communist regimes - or is it closer to ourselves than we like to think? This investigation is not a catalogue of horrors. It asks in a more profound sense what torture does to its victims, and what turns ordinary human beings into torturers. Prompted by a disturbing encounter with a former interrogator from El Salvador 's notorious Treasury Police, he follows a trail that leads to a hard, new world where terrorism, counter-insurgency and torture meet.

She went through the front and the Stalinist camps, where she dreamed of a model of heaven on earth in the spirit of N.G. Chernyshevsky's utopias, about which she wrote to the newspaper. Like the heroine of her idol N.G. Chernyshevsky, Vera Pavlovna from the novel "What to Do?", Anna Andreevna has dreams in which she meets V.I. Lenin.

Nina Perebeeva is the owner of the only private animal shelter in Kazakhstan. Together with her mother, she keeps about 70 dogs. While Nina Vasilyevna spends her tiny pension on food and medicines for her numerous pets, a small truck of skinners is prowling around the city in search of another victim. They grab everyone: mongrels, domestic dogs and even cats, all will do, you can benefit from all of them. Someone can be given to a Korean restaurant, someone for fur, and a couple of unfortunate mongrels can be given to Nina Vasilyevna, she will give at least the last money for them.

The return after thirty years of two incurable globetrotters, Gigi and Guelfo, causes a certain uproar in some Lugano families. Serene and light-hearted, Gigi has no wrinkles on his face or conscience and with his ironic and good-natured philosophy he passes unscathed through the traps that his relatives set for him so that he can get his head straight. Guelfo, on the other hand, longing for tranquility, marries a beautiful widow with children but will immediately have to deal with a reality very different from the one he was used to. However, right after its completion, the 20th May Incident occurred, preventing it from ever reaching the public.

Originally a double screen film the titles comes from a book by W.Grey Walter: "The Living Brain", the book is mostly about flicker and stroboscopic response. In 1988 Chicago Reader's Jonathan Rosenbaum listed this film as Critic's choice.
