Performing gender and bending gender always had an element of risk. As, of course, it still does now. I think what's interesting about the John Kelly film The Dagmar Onassis Story, and the many drag performers that are featured in it, is that it shows how many different strategies and politics and poetics of drag there were in the East Village at that time—ranging from Joey Arias and Klaus Nomi, who appeared with David Bowie in spaceman fashions on Saturday Night Live, but also you have RuPaul, Lady Bunny, and Ethyl Eichelberger. There were many different drag strategies but drag was definitely underground, punk, subversive. There’s something about a John Kelly performance which has the heightened theatricality of a drag performance, but it’s also incredibly lyrical and emotional and it’s hard not to get caught up with the intensity and the adoration of a fan who is so deep that he actually becomes this persona.

The daughter of a Nebraska minister, Anna Louise Strong earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Chicago. But it was in the Pacific Northwest, where she witnessed the 1916 Everett massacre and chronicled the 1919 Seattle General Strike, that her political vision took shape. In Moscow she helped found the first English language newspaper, in Spain her many visits resulted in her book, Spain in Arms; and in China she interviewed Mao in a Yan'an cave in 1946. She is buried in Beijing in a special cemetery for martyrs of the revolution.

These shorts, executed between 1984 and 1986 in Vienna, exude an amazingly fresh intimacy and vitality. Referred to by the filmmakers as »home movies«, they record actionistic performances in the directors’ own living quarters, with added soundtracks of intermittent percussive sounds.

Ivan Ladislav hides a true chamber of wonders behind the clear, mathematically abstract structure of his films and videos, meticulously compiled rhythmically frame for frame, each work likewise presenting an analysis of the film medium. Concealed therein, culled from deep in the medium’s prehistory, are hermetic parallel universes in whose number ranges and symbolic spaces, Galeta’s precisely constructed film compositions find a formalist anchor.

A Vaudeo™ tape by Rhythm & Noise. Originally conceived as a spy thriller with socio-political overtones, Shadowcrack quickly assumed the form of an outline for a series of Vaudeo™ vignettes with partially overlapping plots to be developed in the near future. The Vaudeo™ concept denies the superficial juxtaposition of sound against image present in so-called "music videos" but relies on direct access to the experiential centers of the audience. To this end, Rhythm and Noise suggests playback level louder than normal.

The 1913 Russian Futurist opera Victory Over the Sun follows several archetypes such as The Fat Man, The Strong Men of the Future, and Nero-and-Caligula-In-One-Person as the sun is defeated in battle and imprisoned in a concrete house. The DVD discusses the process of recreating the partially lost opera for its first performance in nearly 70 years. Director Robert Benedetti narrates the film as a documentary on the recreation process and as a guide to the surreal plot of the opera itself. A stage performance of the opera (translated into English) comprises the bulk of the film.

It operates through the juxtaposition of two strands of ambiguously contrasting image and sound. She has said: 'I want to remind the audience that there are different realities that people have to live through … Changing Parts … is about such different realities - the big contrast between a priviledged space, like the West, and the Third World where there's death, destruction, hunger.' (Quoted in Mona Hatoum, 1997, p.127.)

This is Yamada’s first directorial work. The storytelling can be described as a classic fairy tale in the style of old girls’ manga, immediately drawing the viewer into its world from the opening. Thanks to the full support of senior members of the film club, the film was completed with a distinctive atmosphere both fairy-tale-like and, in its own way, strikingly intense.

Madness and anarchism in Alain Klarer's L'Air du crime are too often self-oppressed, having forgotten to live free in their minds. Elena's "terrorism" and Robert's gratuitous quest are all irrational acts perhaps, but ultimately free, a form of rebirth. Yet, some will not be able to bear this madness, chained like Stutz to a coherent structure. Thus, the film moves towards lyricism. First through Peer Raben's music, then through Hugues Ryffel's images. A play on color and light, contrasting a cold, gray, metallic frame and lighting on the rational side, and a sublime, extraordinary blue towards Lake Lucerne, on the side of night, dreams, imagination, suicide, and freedom. Even if the simple narrative sometimes takes over from the madness of the film, it remains a very rich first work, a vast fresco of symbols and ideas.

“Ville Quelle Ville?” reflects a satirical view of city life, commonplace and redundant. Urban life is portrayed as a series of rituals: coming of age in an environment shaped by generations, obscured by the constant barrage of everyday life. The film randomly touches upon key events familiar to everyone in North America, a melting pot of human experiences. As in any city there is an aspect of alienation, here displayed through the eyes of a young woman caught in the web of her own daily existence.
