About Green Flutes, a republican flute band in Govan, Glasgow. Unemployed members of the band outline the creative and political reasons for joining the band and women in Govan talk about the changing attitudes towards their traditional roles. A journey by the band to Northern Ireland places their music within a longstanding cultural tradition in republican history and also highlights parallels between the conditions of life for the working class in Belfast and Glasgow. Made with the collabaration of the James Connolly Flute Band, Joi Leatherbarrow and Keith Lucas.

This superficial, psychological travelog is about a young man who goes to India, leaving behind the woman he once loved, to search for a spiritual awakening. His first such awakening comes in Calcutta when his baggage is stolen, but undaunted, he jumps on a cargo boat going up the sacred Ganges River and thus begins a journey that will take him to the home of a family in a small village and eventually up into the mountains -- long held to be the best places for spiritual discovery. If the internal life of the young man was described in terms of a turbulent past history, unconquerable emotions, trauma, or whatever it was that drove him to India, then viewers might find some inspiration in his journey. As it stands, most audiences would be hard put to sympathize with his search without a good reason -- though the external journey is poetically and eloquently filmed.

From 6 P.M. on July 4, 1983, until 6 P.M. on July 4, 1984, Tehching Hsieh and Linda Montano were tied together continuously with an 8-foot rope which passed loosely around their waists and was sealed at each end. Their intention was not to touch each other except accidentally—about 60 brush-bys and one brief hug by Montano occurred during the year. They slept in separate beds a few feet apart. When one showered, the other waited outside the door, but aside from this they were never in separate rooms. Both remained celibate for the duration. This film was shot on black-and-white super 8mm. That Photograph is an 8mm experimental film made from an animated still. From the Czech photographer, Josef Koudelka’s photography book, KAO chose a photo of his family beholding a body and made copies of it in a myriad of ways. The photo and the camera are stationary; however, the relationship formed between them through production is in motion.

Swissair (Jari Härkönen, Pietari Koskinen, Mikko Kuusaari, Anton Nikkilä, Juha Soivio and Mika Taanila) were formed in the early 80s. This film (1979-1984) is an oddball summing up of edited-in-camera reels combined with a soundtrack consisting of some dynamite tracks from their punk and post-punk inspired cassette albums.

The Super-8 films include some of Huot’s most impressive filmmaking and some of the most impressive Super-8 filmmaking I’ve seen anywhere. Ironically, the handling ease and lower expense of the smaller gauge have resulted in finished films much less personally revealing than the earlier 16mm diaries and much more consciously directed toward audiences: for example, what sexuality we do see in the recent films is in the nature of performance; often Huot and his wife, painter Carol Kinne, design environments, costumes, and sound tracks for comic, pixilated sexual escapades. The Super-8 films continue to reveal Huot’s life, but there is no longer the sense of personal investigation evident in Rolls : 1971. In its place is Huot’s pleasure in recording the beautiful and enjoyable elements of his life and sharing them with viewers.

The Garden of Eden is a 1984 American short documentary film directed by Roger M. Sherman. The film posits that in the next 30 years, 20% of all forms of life will cease to exist. It argues that it can be for good business to save the environment: discoveries in the plant, animal, and microbiology worlds show that what you might think of as unimportant could be the cure to a major disease, save an entire species of plant, or ward off pests. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

Taking place in a laundromat, this film is an exploration of territoriality, paranoia and voyeurism. The space itself exerts an oppressive force on the characters as they strive to define and maintain their individual semi-private spaces in an essentially public place. The watched and the watcher are constantly shifting roles in a "hand-off" of the point of view.

We are told at the beginning that “this film is dedicated to Len Lye” and indeed the camera-less techniques used here – various combinations of dyeing, cutting, scratching and painting the film strip – as well as much of the imagery in Migraine Particles are strongly reminiscent of Lye’s work, with certain key differences. The organic shapes resembling indigenous figuration of sea creatures, the intersecting vertical lines, the animation of forms which appear to interact and the moments of striking three dimensionality all recall Lye’s Tusalava (1929), Free Radicals (1958) and Color Box (1935). De Bruyn’s film seems somewhat free-form at first but in ways that also nod to Lye’s work, a structure of developing sections and a layered repetition of shapes in a loose fugal pattern becomes clearer as the film progresses. -Steven McIntyre

When Olle Möller is charged 1959 for the murder of Rut Lind, it becomes Sweden's biggest murder trial of all time. The accused killer Olle Möller is Sweden's most hated man. On March 7, 1941, Möller was sentenced to ten years in prison for attempted rape, assault and manslaughter. He was released conditionally on September 11, 1948 after serving seven years and nine months of the ten-year sentence. Rut Lind disappeared May 26, 1959, and was later found murdered. The indictment against Olle Möller was entirely based on circumstantial evidence and testimony. The court disregarded testimony from Möller's wife and employer, who argued that Möller could not have had the opportunity to do the deed.
