Cinematic Era: 1984 Vintage

This documentary examines the meanings of peace movements, from a socialist-feminist perspective. Beginning with civil disobedience actions at Litton Systems Canada in Toronto, supplier of parts for cruise missiles, and expanding into just wars in Latin America, major feminist organizers in Toronto like Mariana Valverde and Carmencita Hernandez ponder the rise in militarism in the Mulroney-Reagan era. The film tries to make connections between Canadian and U.S. participation in the arms race, and liberation struggles in the global south.

Shaitan (Joginder) needs to sacrifice seven young women so that he can attain immortality. He stumbles upon a man (Kamal Hassan), who had been worshiping Satan himself for many-many years. Shaitan signs a deal with him, granting temporary youth at first, that will become eternal after the sacrifice of the 7th and last young woman.

Songsong is a kid from a broken family. He seeks love, attention, toys and sweets from his parents but both of them are too busy. His father is an engine driver has little time for the child and though he misses his mother, he is not allowed to see her. In his loneliness he finds a companion in a lovely white goose.

This documentary / fund raiser film was produced in 1984 by the Hong Kong Salvation Army to raise sponsorship for their educational activities in the infamous Kowloon Walled City. The project was filmed in 16mm film.

The writer Jan Kellert - the author of the widely known book "The Legend of the Vistula", which is part of the canon of pre-war middle school reading, comes from Lublin to Żmurki, where he spent the occupation. The division of the Żmurki estate is to take place the next day. Bhavna is a story of a less privileged women. A lady who was living all alone in the city met a man named Ajay Kapoor in a garden, sketching. They became friends and later on friendship turned into love. Eventually they got married, however, Kapor's dad had not granted permission for this marriage. After bearing a financial crises, Ajay went to see his dad who was residing in another city. Ajay never came back to Bhavna. Bhavna went to that city and was astonished to see that Ajay married another women. Dejected Bhanva came back and started a new job. But this was not the end of the story.

The old man circles outside, looking for water with a dousing rod; the young woman circles inside, moving through a labyrinth-like house, dimly lit, all rooms connecting. Sometimes she is a narrator, existing both outside the film space and within it. The premise for this film is based on the conflict between what is inside and what is outside. It is an exploration of the windows between imagination and reality. The woman is looking for something; the old man thinks he knows what it is.

While ill and experiencing some difficulty in completing the editing of this film, Brakhage was reading the Marguerite Young novel, "Miss MacIntosh, My Darling." Coming upon the following passage in her book, he found renewed energy to continue and complete the work: "Why should she give birth, though she had worked in a pottery, to an urn, to a stone angel, to the face of a cracked sundial? Why should she be, she screamed, this common clay, this tortured dust?" From "Miss MacIntosh, My Darling" by Marguerite Young... to whom this film is gratefully dedicated.

Odysseus, a typical bourgeois, married and father of two, is working in the accounting department of a large company when he is suddenly fired, leaving him stranded. Now unemployed, with severance pay in his pocket, he wanders aimlessly around summer Athens. In his wanderings he meets a girl who represents for him the lost youth. He follows her everywhere, but every now and then he loses sight of her and worries. It's a wander from Athens to Hydra, and yet it's full of surprises, funny moments, but also suspense.
