To mark the celebrations of Holy Week, the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico invented (or found) dance-rites in which men paint the face and body. Passion processions depict two kinds of "fariseos" (Pharisees): some dressed in white and crudely daubed with chalk; others, almost naked--feather helmets wearers--fully marked with large white spots. Children, teenagers, young men; all the men of the tribe are organized into a strip under the lead of an older flag carrying dancer. They occupy the site of the village for three days and three nights witn uninterrupted, obstinate drums. Commemoration or preparation for what fight? For the strange figure of Governador leather mask seems to revive the tradition of the leader of nomadic warriors. On Easter morning, the public festivities end abruptly with the appearance of two Pascoleros in body paint, the dual perform a subtle dance: they will be the signal for the up-to-death of Judas.

Ancient of Days is a remarkable series of "canons and fugues for video" that comprises Viola's most sophisticated structural and metaphorical explorations of time. Mathematical notations of precise time-code editing were applied to construct illustrations of temporal symmetry, duality and transposition — time-based equivalents of musical compositional principles such as counterpoint and serialism. Fra Diavolo, ou L'hôtellerie de Terracine (Fra Diavolo, or The Inn of Terracina) is an opéra comique in three acts by the French composer Daniel Auber, from a libretto by Auber's regular collaborator Eugène Scribe. It is loosely based on the life of the Itrani guerrilla leader Michele Pezza, active in southern Italy in the period 1800-1806, who went under the name of Fra Diavolo ("Brother Devil").

Experimental xerofilm shot on Super 8 and made in New York in 1982, developed from experiments with moving sewing threads over a slide mount frame, projected onto a color Xerox machine through a mirror. Mutations and effects arise from alterations also produced by the machine, together with chance. The xerofilm opens a new field for animation and experimental cinema.

Filmed in the stately mansions of New Orleans, Yes, Ma'am shows the role of the black domestic workers in keeping up the gracious lifestyle so closely associated with the old South. On the surface there is a harmonious relationship between employer and employee, but probe a little deeper and grievances emerge. The maids often feel cut off from their own children as they take care of other people's youngsters. The work is physically hard and they are poorly compensated. They have not had an effective labor organization.
