A sense of order is the necessary basis of any good social organisation. To illustrate this axiom, Kiarostami presents a series of paired scenes in this educational short film in which the same action is first shown in an organised way and then in an anarchic one. The film crew, however, finds it difficult to organise disorder.

This short documentary was created by painter Taeko Tomiyama—who consistently resisted various forms of injustice around the world through her art—and film director and producer Katsuhiro Maeda, who was inspired by her. The film centers on the Gwangju Uprising that occurred in South Korea in May 1980. The Gwangju Uprising saw the Chun Doo-hwan regime declare martial law and violently suppress student and citizen protests, resulting in many casualties. Tomiyama responded immediately to the tragedy by organizing a traveling exhibition featuring her print series Prayer for the Fallen. Moved by Tomiyama’s intense anger toward the dictatorship and her deep mourning for the victims, Maeda created this film in 1981. Combining news footage that documents the reality of the events with Tomiyama’s print works—unfolding like shadow play—the film powerfully conveys the nature of state violence and human sacrifice. The music was composed by pianist and composer Yuji Takahashi.

"Oursler’s thematic concerns betray classic Freudian anxieties about sex and death. In Grand Mal, the hero takes a convoluted odyssey through a landscape of disturbing experiences. The video’s free association includes, "digressions about the difference between salt and sugar and a version of the creation myth that is both banal and terrifying." — Christine Tamblyn, “Art Notes,” Scan (November/December 1981)

The year before, I had made a film about the poet Tsutomu Shotsu, and I wanted to make a film about Hiromi Ito, a young female poet on the rise. As I was talking with her, she told me that she loves to pull out hair, and when I asked her about it, her story touched on the sense of life. I decided to film her talking about it. She said that when she pulls out her own hair, she gets excited because she is aware of both herself pulling out and herself being pulled out. Skin is a problem, she said. As I was filming, I was surprised to find that her story had become a great theory of the body. For the introduction, I borrowed a song by Hikashu. Produced in 1981. The artist was 46 years old. (Suzuki Shiroyasu).
