The early 1930s in Berlin. Cabaret artist Emil Damaschke wants to entertain people with his program - together with Ida, the attraction from Hungary. But because he risks a lip that is too big, he is thrown out of the "Rosenthaler" cabaret, ends up on the criminal circuit and briefly in prison. Back out again, he and his colleagues leased the "Rosenthaler", whose Jewish owners had fled abroad to escape the Nazis. They set up a cooperative. However, a gang of criminals who professed allegiance to the Nazis wanted a share of the profits and believed they had a free ride. Emil rejects Ida's intention to win over the workers as a new audience, he makes money with advertising and refuses to join the criminals. They kidnap Ida, murder her in the forest and make sure that Emil is framed for the murder. Emil ends up in prison and the criminals take over the cabaret - in Nazi uniform.

Suzhou Pingtan artist Guo Yueting lives a poor but harmonious life with his wife Meiyu and twin daughters Baimei and Hongmei. Unexpectedly, misfortune falls from the sky, as the bully Qiu Long seizes Meiyu and tears the "plum blossom scarf" embroidered by Meiyu during their fight. In a rage, Guo Yueting slashes Qiu Long with a knife, and must flee overseas. Meiyu and her daughters flee to Shanghai with her husband's brother, Xia Yueqing. The arrest of Haji Jalaluddin during his sermon leaves a strong impression on the hearts of Hamid and Halimah, his followers. Halimah is a wife who is taken for granted by her husband who is pro-Dutch. Hamid is the son of a rich merchant who falls into poverty after being branded as a rebel. His mother takes him to Padang to be raised by the family of Haji Jakfar, who has a daughter, Zainab. Hamid then studies at Padang Panjang and meets old friends, Fakhrudin and Zainudin. Hamid and Fakhrudin have more similar views with their teacher, while Zainudin is more radical. The latter organises a rebellion and fails. The Dutch keeps arresting people. Hamid, disappointed by Zainab’s marriage to someone else, sails to Mecca. Halimah is left to organise the fight for freedom but in the end, is also captured by the Dutch. The film’s message is that a physical fight for freedom, without being based on religious morality, will become meaningless.

The main "entertainment" is an elegant blond man who claims he is an actor and has traveled the world. His stories mesmerize most of the passengers. Nevertheless, there is a man of stern appearance who differs from the masses. He travels with a trained sparrow hidden in his coat and does not believe the tales of the so-called actor, and openly declares it. The men get into a fight...
