Cinematic Era: 1979 Vintage

An actuality film of a county fair and its varied attractions.

Hermitage - the treasury of world art. Surprise and delight become the companion of a person who passed through the halls of this museum. Here is a picture, sculpture, panel, made of multicolored stones. Look in the hall of ancient gems and find on one of the showcases cameo Gonzago. Next to it time manifests its most mysterious properties, the minutes are compressed into centuries, and the surrounding space inhabit heroic ancient characters... Wondering about the beauty of the ancient jewelry, you will unwittingly ask yourself what miracle stone has given nature into the hands of an ancient master. It is agate...

Egg factory. The eggs are arranged in orderly rows and march in rhythm. One small egg falls out of the circles measuring the size. The other eggs laugh at him. In the paint department, all eggs are painted in bright colors. Only the small egg remains white and sad. Finally, however, it turns out that only it hatches a yellow chicken.

While composed of pure/blank color frames (often “flickering”), this is not a “Structural Film”; there’s no predetermined overall structure to the work (which is, anyway, only “chapter one” of a sort of “abstract novel” in progress, a novel which can become extremely lengthy in its projected series of chapters, a novel with a beginning, a middle but no preconceived ending). The film moves from “episodes” of different lengths and moods/rhythms/melodies, without any apparent cause-effect, like life itself, which passes on (“passare” – to pass, to pass on) from one unpredictable event/emotion to another. Each ‘episode’ is based upon some feeling, event or place and is aesthetically resolved; but there are no links from one episode to another. The episodes may be as short as one second or as long as ten minutes; each is my subjective interpretation of actual incidents, places, feelings, etc. into the terms of pure temporal color. Everything is in actual chronological order.

"Denain, Blast Furnace of Wrath" was produced with very few means but the film was widely distributed until in Norway where it came to support the strike of steelworkers engaged in their country for the same fight. Only one regret: despite all my efforts to seek funding, I was never able to shoot 'USINES' which would have been the continuation and the observation of this situation triggered in the process with the closure of the Usinor site. Neither Robert, nor Pierre, nor the others, and there were many of them, were never able to speak.

Rushing through time from the limited space of the tram, we are presented a metaphor of how we pass through our lives - only limitedly affected by the significant events that affect us.

A three-dimensional clay-animated film satirizing western movies

A woman applies make-up in an attempt to change her appearance to more closely resemble an ideal of feminine beauty. As the camera closes in, the ideological and commercial images that determine her goal are literally jig-sawed over her face. She becomes a single element among a conglomerate of media images and then is entirely effaced. An ironical soundtrack further emphasises the artificiality of these constructions.

he claustrophobia of media "reality" - compartmentalized into game shows, movies, news reports, commercials - is presented as continuous interchangeable spectacle. This film looks at the ideology of misrepresentation, the turning of facts into icons, history into myth. It analyzes the media's metalanguage, especially the image of woman as spectacle and commodity; and the psychology and economics of male voyeurism.

Segment produced by Bill Day includes footage from the film to illustrate Haven's discussion of her role. Borderline is about a young journalist who is brought into the criminal underbelly by selling stolen Mexican antiquities to fund her struggling underground newspaper.

On November 26, 1976, Massimo Bacigalupo was in Catania with his 16mm camera, filming the streets of the city at the foot of Mount Etna and the people lingering and strolling about. The movement and the pauses in everyday life —seemingly boring and not particularly appealing— captured the filmmaker’s attention. Bacigalupo recalls those diary-style film shots, edited years later into a film:

“JoAnn & Susan x2” begins with a female protagonist, JoAnn Elam, playfully modeling a red, knit blanket, superimposed by a rider, JoAnn's sister Susan Elam, and her steed moseying around a indoor corral in Grayslake, IL. As the juxtaposition continues, Susan meanders in the background and JoAnn time travels backward, through a series of segments utilizing the blanket's progression as a visual marker: she goes from modeling the finished blanket, to sowing the blankets seam, to knitting the blanket in progressively smaller increments.

It invites the audience to enter Danielle's home and life in this short film, considered one of the pioneers in addressing the LGBTQIA+ universe without resorting to stereotypes, having won the award for best film at the Super Festival Nacional do Filme Super 8.

Soji-ji (1979) is a video work documenting a chant recitation at a Zen temple. The chant recited by many monks does not proceed in unison like group singing. Each monk recites in sync with his breath, so that the intake of breath occurs at different moments. That is to say, each monk articulates the chant differently. Since there is no unified division, when the multiple chants overlap, an endless wave of chant (sutra) appears as a collective density or modality (at the same time, each monk’s steps form a totally different rhythm from the individual chants).

Playing with yourself, asking yourself questions and giving yourself answers. With the video delude yourself that you are not alone.
