This documentary about the early Indians of the Great Basin emphasizes the traditional culture of the last 5,000 years. The story unfolds through the words and skills of the older Piaute women of southeastern Oregon and northern Nevada. They tell us how they make cakes from berries, baskets from tulles, cord for nets…necessary daily tasks linked with an ancient heritage. The earth is ever present in the film, wildlife, rivers and marshes, sagebrush desert, all part of the story. The lifeways of the Northern Paiutes are followed through a seasonal cycle, from root-gathering in spring to building shelter in winter.

Recounts the founding of Haiti through the eyes of two captured African tribespeople, Sili and Simba. Starting with their capture in Africa, the story follows their trans-Atlantic journey on a slave ship to Haiti. There they escape their slavery on a French plantation and join the fight for independence led by Toussaint L'Ouverture and Dessaline, ultimately joining in the celebration of the first raising of the Haitian flag.

Genni Batterham was a young healthy 24-year-old student when she contracted multiple sclerosis (M.S.). Within 18 months she became a paraplegic. This film follow Genni through the continual frustrations of the day. PINS AND NEEDLES takes a poignant look at overall reactions, treatment and acceptance of disabled people and offers some enlightened alternatives to the options presently available to the disabled.

By re-shotting several still photographs in 8mm, the film gives movement to the supposedly motionless still images and uses zooming and other effects to lure the viewer into a surreal world where a man's "face" rotates in time and space. While using the usual methods of depicting an unrealistic world, each movement of the subject successfully creates a rhythm in the image that brings this work to a certain level.

Filmed with the Bolex Rx8 camera which was the exact same size as a 16mm Bolex but holding 4 times the amount of film time-wise. These rolls were spontaneously edited with my in-camera style and have emerged as portraits, mostly of artist friends, including the painter and colleague Lynn Shelton at work in his San Francisco home studio. There is also a black & white “portrait” of my old Los Angeles neighborhood and a glimpse of my current locale in Sonoma County California. In the Thessaloniki area, a poor family experiences a similar drama when Electra urges Orestes to kill their mother, not because she killed their father, but because she herself desires Aegisthus. Subsequently, the two siblings become lovers and catharsis never comes.

Applying: a nude woman is painted completely black. Attention concentrated on the process of going from white to black. Removing: she washes herself off in the bathtub, and goes from black to grey to white. Seemingly austere, the film is resonant on many levels, and each viewer brings to it his/her own associations.
