The "exquisite corpse" named in the title of this piece refers to a favorite game of the Surrealists, played by passing a folded sheet of paper among a group; each person draws one section of a body on the folded segment without looking at the other sides. What was done with pen and paper, Gusella accomplishes electronically using the VideoLab. Utilizing quick, voltage-controlled live switching between two cameras, Gusella approximates composite images. For examples, his torso appears to combine with a close-up of his face. The perceptual effect is mesmerizing and disorienting.

Four contemporary Kentuckians — James Still, Robert Penn Warren, Ronnie Criswell, and Billy Davis — discuss their work and its relationship to the environment in which they live. Ronnie Criswell reads his poetry over scenes of a drinking and brawling neighborhood in Louisville where he grew up, works reflecting both a cynicism and an affection for that environment. Poet and novelist James Still, filmed at his rural Eastern Kentucky home, talks about his writing which expresses great fondness for and attachment to the region’s land and people. Robert Penn Warren offers his reflections on how the world has changed since he was a boy in Western Kentucky and recites some of his poetry about naturalist John James Audubon. Photographer Billy Davis displays his aerial photographs and is accompanied on a picture-taking flight in a small plane while he captures unique aerial views of the Kentucky landscape.

This is the first comprehensive U.S. film to explore the origins and growth of traditional Puerto Rican music. Interviews with musicians living in New York reveal how traditional music is used as a source of resistance against cultural domination. Their music is also a means by which Puerto Rican culture is maintained and transformed. The film focuses on the music of "Lexington Avenue Express", a group that has taken their music to community centers, political events, prisons and music festivals.

The filmed image is liberated from the shackles of representation of an external reality, becoming autonomous and spatial; the sound drifts and is regenerated by its asyncronous but nevertheless intimate relation to the image. Here, the sound is not reduced to the secondary role of accompanying the image. It constitutes the sensory experience just as much as does the image. Fast motion, slow motion, superimposition, reflection, colorization, filtering and synthetic composition: a combination of effects that produces a long audiovisual perspective within just one sequence.
