The appeal for a socialist consumer society launched by Edward Gierek’s government catapulted Fiat 126p (production launched in 1973) to the status of a household icon. Rytka shows off the Polish consumer fetish in pop art-flavored close-ups and repetitions, thus ironically denouncing the demagoguery of the communist authorities.
In 1976, Welsh rock group Man called it quits (but later reunited) and decided to record their last days with performances at London's Roundhouse -- all captured in this video souvenir, which includes interviews with the band. Cube and Room Drawings begins with a view looking down at an angle toward grey paper covering the floor. A performer enters from the back of the scene and begins drawing lines on the floor. The lines are the beginning of a drawing of a distorted cube. The performer leaves the scene. The paper begins to rotate on the floor. As the paper rotates the cube gradually becomes correctly oriented, as if it were drawn on a vertical piece of paper. The performer enters again and draws another cube that corresponds to the perspective of the other cube. After leaving and re-entering the performer draws red receding lines on the floor. He leaves and the paper rotates and the red lines become a grid that corresponds to the vertical screen. The film continues with several additional actions that continue this theme. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2012.
We traveled to Indiana back roads to see and shoot the annual Miss Nude Universe Contest held at a “notorious” nudist camp. They wanted $15 a head at the gate so we parked down the road and crawled through the brush. Once in, we encountered truckers and hundreds of Sunday photographers straining for a shot at the contestants. Afterward we joined the quest for stray women willing to pose. After a quick success we headed home with our catch in the can.
